Conquer the Step 1!

2007 Residency Match Countdown

USMLE STEP 1 PREP: POINTS TO PONDER

1. While studying for the USMLEs, time is the most precious commodity and time management is as vital as studies ! Get over the common practice of first studying what you are more comfortable with and postponing reading the bad stuff like acid-base balance, nephrology , hormones, or whatever area you suck at, unless ofcourse, you suck at everything like I did ;-)

2. Know what material is the best to read for each subject and collect the required material in advance. Its too easy to waste time wallowing in all different waters and then finally coming back to the commonly used study material. 'What to read will be compiled soon on a separate post on this blog.

3. Since a lot on the Step is fact-based, creating charts and tables is a great way of revising what you read. These will be compiled later on various sections on this blog. As you study you will notice that a lot of information can be compiled into charts , tables or flow-diagrams. First Aid for Step 1 is an excellent and indispensible resource for a rapid revision of such high-yield facts -If you are lucky, you could get a 2005 used copy here for Less than 20$

4. Time your exam well - taking the exam and scoring is one thing ..and strategizing for a residency match is another. Go through the Tips-N-Tricks for Residency Applications at Tips4Match.blogspot.com

5. There is possibly no limit to what you can read and there is no limit to amount of time one can keep studying for the Step 1 - there are hundreds of book and hundreds of sites loaded with medical information. It is very enticing to read those cute looking subject books but we gotta realize that time-tested study materials are more important

6. Start going through Questions like the Kaplan Qbank early in the game! Going through Questions and getting ample practice of thinking within a small time frame is indispensable. Another advantage is that questions give you a good direction and help you focus on what is really asked on the boards!
