Internal Medicine Externships at Univ. New Mexico

The Internal Medicine residency program at University New Mexico is IMG-friendly, has lotsa fellowships and about fills up about 40-50% of those fellowship positions with it's own Internal Medicine graduates ..and apparently, if you did an externship there and you are liked, you have a good chance of getting into their program.

An anonymous reader posted information about an externship available at their program:

"There is hands on clinic experience available through internal medicine program..upto 90 days..email the program coordinator, Linda Simmons at LSimmons@salud.unm.edu....and the externs who have previously rotated have matched in the program!"

And this was confirmed by someone else that I know, got a reply like this :-)

"Thank you for your interest in the University of New Mexico Internal Medicine Residency Program. We do not offer observerships, and our externships are available ONLY to those foreign medical graduates who live in Albuquerque or have strong ties to the Albuquerque community and also have a US Social Security number."

So, There ! You have all the information you need...you now wished you lived in New Mexico ? :-)

Link to the program

Note: As an IMG, You can have a social security number only if you have a job (full time or part time) in the US - either on a student visa or any work visa. B1/B2 holders cannot apply for social security numbers

And Thanks to both people for the above information !

This gotta take the cake for most obsessive-sounding degree of caution & fear about having students/docs over for observerships..lol..read on

Like the website says:

"Opportunities for, and sanctioned activities of, observers are very limited! Per UCSD policy, all opportunities for Visiting Observers must be for no more than 5 days. Most visiting observerships with the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery are approved for no more than one or two days"

Visiting Clinical Observers:

- Have no access to patient information, records, photos, videos, etc.
- Have no access to Hospital record or database systems.
- Patient consent is required from patient for Observer to be present during visit

All inquiries for Visiting Observerships should be sent to Elizabeth Wei at ewei@ucsd.edu
