He billed the state for clients that were never present as per this news here. However, the American Medical News also featured the Barry Mehta Externship program, Read the News article here. digitaldoc, what do you know about fmgaffordable.com? Do you know anyone who's got an externship through them? Do they provide all that they've promised?

Hi Digidoc,
This is a great list for students like us applying for residency. I have a doubt has anyone used Dr. Barry Mehta's externship services. I have seen their website and a bit skeptical about it. So just asking you if anyone has used it and know it's reliable.
I couldn't locate her in any hospital in Maryland and hence n doubt.
If you have any further information about it and like to share, it will be of great help.
Thanks

Since it is a relatively launch, it will probably be sometime until I hear about experiences - but thank you for this pointer, I shall look out for it

I called up Barry mehta and the first thing he kinda rudely asked was if I had the money to pay him - nothing asked about my background, scores and stuff - of maybe i caught him in a bad mood

HI DIGITALDOC,
i found strange thing about fmgaffordable.com(actually fishy!!).
Few days prior clearly site was mentioning about tution fees and hostel fees. When i saw site 3 days back, i was shocked now site mentions that fees will be disclosed as student enroll!! I think Dr.Bary Mehta is also a fan and regular visitor of usmletomd.com!!!

Digitaldoc, MD said...
LOL - hmmm..or maybe criticism bout those published fees not really being 'affordable especially to FMGs' as the website name goes ;-)

hi
what is the minimum time period for observeship?
11:40 AM
Digitaldoc, MD said...
Do you mean - in general - or with Barry Mehta. Generally, maybe 3 months is a decent time, but many do it for 1 month each to get as many LORs as possible

If your doc agrees to it - you can call it what he agrees to - if it all anyone seeks confirmation with him :-)

hi how much approximately is the costof doing observeship under a known doctor?

Many doctors would not even charge you anything...but prefer a University observership rather than a private practitioner

Hi digital doc
Do we need to have a known doc in a university to get observership?? or we just have to send a application. I read requirements of observership on your website and it was written that you must have a faculty member to guide you during your observership. What is meant by this? Please help.

Answer 1: During internship, you can try for an elective - if you dont get it by the time you graduate, the next thing to try for is observerships and externships. Takes a lot of time, often there are waiting lists...so do start looking into things early
Answer 2:
It means that you must FIRST contact individual faculty in that place to allow you to observe them - i.e. they must act as 'sponsors' or 'guide' or 'preceptors' or 'mentors' of your observership. Once you find someone willing, then the graduate medical office of that program will take it from there. Finding a willing 'sponsoring' faculty is a matter of luck and contacting the right person at the right time - so contact all..someone might jst be willing :-)

The decision rests with the doctor, if he/she allows you to call it so on your resume and mentions that on your LOR, you can go ahead and call it an externship on your ERAS application

hi digidoc
now i am really confused.
can you tell me please that which one out of the two is a better option?? Getting into a postgraduarte program in the USA or doing some clinical experience??
9:14 PM
Digitaldoc, MD said...
U mean a residency when you say PG program ? Observerships and other USCE are means to improve application to improve chances to get into a residency position. If you get a residency without all that - well and good ! :-) :-) That would be great

ohh i m sorry i thonk i wasnt very clear with what i asked !! I meant getting into a postgraduate program like MPH through GRE was better than a clinical experince for a few months or is it the other way??

i want to know that if given an option what shud i choose to do??
clinical experience or a degree in public health/hosp admin. which one will prove more beneficial in getting into residency??

I would go with good clinical experience that will give you clinical US LORs - positively help a good deal for getting more interviews

hi digital doc
i cant understand what type of clinical experience should i apply to since i am a green card holder and will move to US in march next year. i shall finish my internship in india by february after which i will move to US and march 2008 and wanted to apply for USCE in or after march. now by that time i will have my USMLE step 1 results.
I called harbour hospital for externship but they require both step 1 and step 2 scores for externship. but if i apply for clerkship then i have to be a 4th year student which i will not be in next march. so what should i do?
should i apply for clerkship for march next year if if by that time i have finished my internship in india?? kindly help!

Hi, for doing clerkships (electives), you need to be in the 4th year WHILE doing those clerkships, not just while applying for them, hence you would be eligible for externships and observerships or mini-residencies like the program in Miami - apply for all of those. Most externships programs will require you to have ECFMG certification (Step1,Step 2CK and Step 2 CS done) - but I would say concentrate first on getting good scores on the Step 2 CK, and schedule your USCE such that you can complete step 2 CK before you start the USCE

hi again!!
Since i am no more a 4th year medical student and externships are all paid. Can you please suggest if the volunteer services listed on almost all hospital websites are beneficial or considered as USCE ??
12:52 PM
Digitaldoc, MD said...
Only if they have clinical duties assigned to you - volunteering could be anything from delivering medications, food, assisting the old to some of the nurse duties - ask them specifically if you could work with a physician in the volunteering experience.
Not all externships are paid though - for example the providence hospital externship at Baltimore, Maryland
Hey doc !!
How you doin? I wanted to ask you that is it safe if i still do my clinical electives at a hospital after i finish my internship in india. although i applied when i was an intern. Does it et me into any trouble ;-) ??
I would recommend to communicate with your own medical school office first to see if your internship can be 'extended' - better to play safe.
