Congrats to all 2009 Residency Matchers...and
...And godspeed to to those who will be participating in the scramble.Scramble is certainly not easy, but chance only works if you give it try, so jump it into it and try your best - You will find some useful preparation tips on the post-match scramble tips-n-tricks blog.
I have been just busy myself and almost missed the match moment, until my cousin texted me that he got lucky this time and matched. I apologize that I am finding it sorta tough to be in more regular touch with you guys, but hopefully i have typed in enough info on this blog to help ya'll with the basics !

I have a question: we know that the hospitals usually publish on their websites about the residency programs available and they ofcourse tell that they will choose the residents from the MATCH
My question is : Does the residency program chef or the head of department whoever! does he has the authority to select a resident away from the MATCH ?!
And If the hospital announced that Family Medicine for example is available residency program . but I have good recommendation from a big doctor working in other department , the Chest department ,Does the Head of the Chest Department have the authority to select me as a resident in his department ??
I have thought that this could be possible because you know that the MATCH every year is in March,so the residents will begin their residency in June -July /
So what will happen then if thehospital needs residents in Dec or Jan ?

When you meant outside the match, were you implying a prematch ? Even prematched residents will begin their terms in July-June.
But as happened in my program, yes residents can be taken in other months too if there's a sudden vacancy. That will be treated a late-joining resident for that year and the resident will have to that many months extra after June-July of the academic year to get his/her academic year credited.
But as i said, resident appointments out of turn can be made only in vacancies created, extra positions are usually not allowed outside the quotas set for the program

thank you for your reply.but I still can't figure out if i couldn't match myself through the NRMP. Can a head of Department in a hospital ,where I knew alot of doctors wotking in it , take me as a resident in his department?
Does he have this authority ?

Digital doc thank you for your advise.After failing csa and retaking;despite being old IMG(graduated 12 years back)I made it this year.Thanks to you and God and very sympathetic residency director it happened .My depression is lifting.All the money,time and stress is not in vain.Thank you
