Leaves of Absence Rules during Residency / Fellowship
T
his post should rather be a part of my upcoming blog about USMLE, Residency and fellowship basics - but since the designing isn't done yet, I am sticking it in here for a while :-)
Thought this might be of interest to you resident-to-be guys and perhaps even current residents/fellows. What decides the amount of leave (vacation, sickness, maternity, paternity) you can take during those residency years is the rules set by the respective American boards for the specialty. Dr. Jagsi et al. have compiled a neat listing of such board-wise rules.
It's amusing to note the pretty big differences. For example, the American Board of Internal Medicine says:
"Trainees may take up to one month per year of training for vacation, parental or family leave, or illness (including pregnancy-related disabilities). Training must be extended to make up any absences exceeding one month per year of training.”
While the Board of Radiology says:
“Leaves of absence and vacation may be granted to residents at the discretion of the program director in accordance with local rules. Within the required period(s) of graduate medical education, the total such leave and vacation time may not exceed SIX CALENDAR WEEKS (30 working days) for residents in a program for one year, TWELVE CALENDAR WEEKS (60 working days) for residents in a program for two years, EIGHTEEN CALENDAR WEEKS (90 working days) for residents in a program for three years, or TWENTY FOUR CALENDAR WEEKS (120 working days) for residents in a program for four years. If a longer leave of absence is granted, the required period of graduate medical education must be extended accordingly"
**Sigh**...the radiology guys have it better always - better money, better work hours, better leaves and a flexible board ;-)

The PDF was compiled to support an article by the authors that analyzed the growing need to make reforms to leave rules during residency as more female residents make up the work force. Having more females needing pregnancy leaves puts increased work loads on the other residents.
