Barriers to the IMG race for a US Residency

Here's to enlisting some barriers that IMGs face en route to a residency spot
1. The Financial Barrier: All that Money for the USMLE Steps, for those expensive books, for the travel to and within USA - not every IMG's cup of tea :-(
2. The Exam-Visa Barrier for Step 2 CS and Step 3: It's ridiculous, you will agree, that IMGs are happily allowed to take the Step 1 in their own countries, but often blatantly rejected visa the Step 2 CS and/or Step 3 - "We sold you a movie ticket - Awrite! enjoy ! ..........Oh did you say you wanted to see the movie too ? Hmmm...bummer...we didn't think of that !" .lol
3. The Program-Visa Barrier: Now we really understand that one, but its funny when you sometimes see "We do not sponsor visas" and "We are an equal opportunity employer" statements on the same website of a residency program ;-)
4. The "IMG-Friendliness" Barrier: Not all Programs accept International Medical Graduates. And on the funny side, there are some that accept IMG applications but not the IMGs themselves ;-) Another Money maker for the ERAS-ECFMG folks, you will agree ;-)
5. The "US Experience" Barrier: You need a residency for US experience...but you need US Experience for residency ..Catch 22 eh ?
6. The Language barrier: "Well...we IMGs know English - we just speak it differently" ;-)
7. The Cultural barrier
8. The Specialty Barrier: Let me quote my friend here = "The 'hard cash' specialties are for American Grads - the 'hard work' specialties are for IMGs" :-) :-) :-)
9. The Score Barrier: "Most of our American grads can get that score ...it's that low.. you need to go higher Mr. IMG" ;-)
Well..most of it was on a funny vein anyways ..don't think we can complain too much, can we ?

Post Your Comment !HI,HOW RU?I'VE BUGGED A LOT MANY TIMES BEFORE!
BUT THIS TIME ITS VERY DIFFERENT AND TRICKY
ACTUALLY I'M DOING FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENCY ON J1 IN MICHIGAN VERY NICE PROGRAM,NO ISSUES I LIKE IT,BUT ITS TOO MUCH,LIKE EVERY ONE I THOUGHT TOO ITS EASY BUT BELIEVE ME ITS TOUGHEST,I SHOULD KNOW EVERYTHING OF EVERY BRANCH.
THAT'S NOT THE MAIN ISSUE ,THOUGH I'M BIT OVERWHELMED IN FM, I KNOW MY MAIN THRILL IS IN OBGYN.
IS IT POSSIBLE OR SHOULD I SAY IS IT FEASIBLE,AND HOW DIFFICULT VS EASY IS IT TO GET TRANSFERED FROM FM TO OB?
WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS?
WHAT ARE THE TO DO AND DON'Ts?
WILL MY PD COME TO KNOW AND MAY BE A PROBLEM?
FM and Ob-Gyn are pretty related and you should have no problem explaining your program director about your emerging love for Ob-Gyn.
Ob-gyn is pretty intense too, with heavy work hours and lots of malpractice cases - it is the most sued specialty in the USA ! Do take note of that and do some research about the specialty in US before your decision.
FP can have lots of OB Too and you can find jobs with Ob emphasis..in fact, there are Ob-Gyn fellowships are FP too.. thought, I dont know much about them at this point.
hi, digidoc, this is an img from india, recently read the news dated
15 December, 2007
US gives parity status to India's medical education
The United States has said India's recognition system for under-graduate medical courses is at par with theirs, an achievement that could facilitate mobility of doctors from here to US.
National Committee on Accreditation in the US, the apex body responsible for foreign accreditation, has granted parity to the recognition system in India for the courses.
"The MCI had sought parity status from the National Committee on Accreditation. It was granted last month, which means quality wise, the under-graduate courses in India are at par with the US," Dr Vedprakash Mishra, Vice-Chancellor, Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences University, who was part of the MCI team to negotiate with the US agency, told reporters at the Indo-US Healthcare Summit here.
The parity has been granted for two years. "During this period, our recognition system will be monitored by them. Then India will get permanent parity status," he said.
but i cudnt understand the importance of this news for indian graduates opting for us residency.
can u pls illuminate me on this topic?
