WHY APPLY ON TIME ? KNOW THE MATHS...

Be informed that while interviewing, programs typically choose about 10 times their intake capacity and little more as per their budget, on a set date from the pool of applications that have been received through ERAS by then. So if there are 12 positions expect about 140-150 interviewees. This 'set date' is unofficial and is highly variable. Interview invites are then sent out to selected candidates. Once all dates are confirmed by candidates, programs do not look at any more applications until someone cancels interviews ! So ....is it clear now why your application must reach on time ! If not , lets look at a sample here : The Family Practice Residency program at William Beaumont Hospital, Michigan clearly mentions on its site that applicants are considered on a "First-come, First Served" Basis - Check that out Here.

Normally Community Programs choose Interviewees earlier than University Hospitals i.e. the 'set-date' is usually before the end of September - whereas University hospitals may send out invitations by October. But since the year 2005 has been crazy for both with applications received - I anticipate earlier choose times by University Hospitals next year ! Hmmm..lets see

can u plz tell me what are the chances of a interview call if i apply only with step 1 score??? & plz put some highlight on COUPLE match.

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (April 27, 2006 12:00 AM) :

An Excellent Step 1 score can still draw interviews , like my friend had. If you have already taken the Step 2 by the time you apply and are awaiting scores - that too helps in getting more interviews..

i am taking my step 2ck by mid aug so i will get my results by either 1st or 2nd week of sept. do you think that's a good time to apply for residency (1st or 2nd week of sept since i wanna apply with step 2 score).

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (June 03, 2006 2:39 PM) :

Yes...in ur case, if you indeed take ur exam by Mid Aug, apply with both scores in hand...

g/l

Hey digidoc

I am an IMG, done with my 2 cs only.Hope to finish my step 1 in sept and my 2ck in jan07.considering that i get my step 1 results in oct.Can i apply with only step 1 and step2 cs ?or is 2007 match out of bounds for me?

Will appreciate the help!

For IM programs...ur situation could be a gamble and depends on whether you wanna spend the $$ to take the chances...a great step 1 score may land u a few interviews..but on guarantees can be made..

u may have better chances with family practice, psychiatry, etc..

Anonymous said ... (July 03, 2006 6:19 AM) :

Thank u for ur response.

Thinkig positively,if i manage to get into a family practice program, since IM is wat i really want (like any FMG),will i be able to switch in the next year?If so,do i ve to go thro the entire match formalities again or will i be able to get into a pgy2 IM program?wat r the chances that such a switch is possible??

Thanx again for ur time.

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (July 14, 2006 2:33 PM) :

The policies differ from program to program - some IM programs may allow you to join PGY2 directly...while some may only grant you 6 months recognition..while others may grant none. Often, you can change WITHIN the same program to the IM department. Yes , you have to go thru the ERAS thing again ...

Hi,
I am going to give Step 2 CK in August. I'm done with Step 1 & CS. i was wondering if it's ok if i pick up the ERAS token once i get my CK results which will be by Sept 1st week. It's my 2nd attempt at CK so don't want to pay $ 75 before knowing my results. ECFMG website says the tokens can be picked up till April 1st 2007..but i've heard people say that 'tokens have to be picked up ASAP!' So was wondering if there's any truth in that.

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (July 15, 2006 4:12 PM) :

Hi...about the token:

Why Early ..coz unless you take the token and get the AAMC ID, you would not be able to send in your Documents (Lors, Deans letter, etc.) to ERAS for scanning and attaching to your application to programs...this all takes time , sometimes upto two weeks. So if you decide "OK ..I wanna apply tomorrow" - you will have to wait 2 weeks until ERAS finishes work on their side.!!

Dear Doc,

I passed out in 2000 May. I have got 99 in both Step 1 and 2. But nothing remarkable in terms of experience in the past few yrs.

How do u rate my chances as I can apply in only one city-NY

Desperately waiting,
Yrs truly

hi digidoc

what are my chances of getting interviews if i apply with step1 score 90 and csa pass?? expecting to take 2ck in late sept. or should i just plan on applying next year????

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (July 22, 2006 9:44 AM) :

Take calculated chances - write to all programs to see if they will consider ur application with step 2 CK scores in Oct. - the ones that say no - dont apply ..the others - take ur chances :-)

Anonymous said ... (July 25, 2006 1:10 PM) :

hi digitaldoc!
i am an img from india, sadly i failed my step 1 and am awaitinig my cs results. i will b givin my ck this august and step1 again in spetember!do u think i should apply for the 2007 match and is yes what are my chances of getting into a residency prgm(peds),(caus i failed my 1st step)without any usce!Cause i heard getting into a residency program after failing a step is next to impossible!
thank u!

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (August 01, 2006 2:52 AM) :

To the Dude applying only to NY programs - great scores ! since you are applying to a restricted area - take up any prematch you get - unless some programs give you true assurances about the match !

To the person who failed a step : its not impossible to get in after a failure , but you need to make up to it with a good score on ur next attempt, usce and having all scores on time - dont apply to too many programs this year - u may be better off next year with an improved application profile..

Anonymous said ... (February 25, 2007 2:04 PM) :

hi !! is it true that if i want to do fellowship in cardiology later on then i need to apply to university based hospitals only ....what if i apply to any other hospital, how hard is it to get a fellowship? thnxs in advance

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (February 25, 2007 4:13 PM) :

That's not true - though the fact remains that chances are higher if you did a residency in a University Program - but many community programs too have good fellowship placements. This is the question to be asked to the residents and program directors when you goto interviews. i.e. fellowship placement history of the program

hi digdoc. Thank you for your site.

Hi Digitaldoc, great work! Im an IMG, GC holder with mediocre scores but was lucky emough to get an observership and ongoing Clinical research experience at a really good place..What sucks is I have only 2 LOR's and Im waiting for a good one before I apply. I feel like I'm never going to have a chance this year because Im so late..what do you think?

Blogger Digitaldoc, MD said ... (September 15, 2007 12:25 PM) :

I would not say so - take your chances, secure another letter from previous faculty contacts and apply ..you never know
