MSPE VERSUS DEAN'S LETTER

Earlier, for the 2006 Match, candidates had to either submit a Dean's Letter OR the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) - but for the 2007 Match, the rules are CHANGED !

Let's have a look at the what the MSPE announcement on the MSPE Guide Reads

(Download the ERAS MSPE Guide Here):

"The name of the dean’s letter has been changed, effective immediately, to Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) in order to reflect its purpose as an evaluation of a medical student’s performance (rather than a recommendation or prediction of future performance). The MSPE describes, in a sequential manner, a student’s performance, as compared to that of his/her peers, through three full years of medical school and, as much as possible, the fourth year. The MSPE includes an assessment of both the student’s academic performance and professional attributes."

And later on this part was included for those people who do not have a MSPE but have a Dean's Letter instead:

"You can submit a Dean’s letter as your MSPE. The term “Dean’s letter” is no longer used. The term “Medical Student Performance Evaluation” (MSPE) has been implemented to better describe the purpose of this document, which is to evaluate the performance of the medical student. It is not a letter of recommendation. The content of the MSPE/Dean’s letter is what matters, not the name of the document."

Which means - even if you submitted a document called "Dean's letter" to ERAS-ECFMG, that will be inlcluded on your application as "MSPE" and will be called MSPE

Download the Sample MSPE Template Format :
MSPE PDF file OR MSPE Word file

Now why did this happen ? The Dean's letter did not adequate reflect a comparison of the candidate with his peers in the class and was written more as a formality by official people not entirely aware of the candidate's merits and deficits. Hence the MSPE is being advocated instead.

What if you do not have an MSPE / Dean's Letter by the time of ERAS applications ?

You are required to mention it's unavailability on the Common Application Form on MyERAS - and ERAS is then supposed to place a standardized document in PLACE of an MSPE for such candidates - as the ECFMG website section thankfully says :

"A neutral filler letter will be provided in place of a MSPE. The filler letter will be provided to all of the programs to which you apply, and will state, This is in lieu of a MSPE." This will ensure that your application will appear as complete, for those programs that require a MSPE before considering your application."

hi ...
well i called ecfmg yesterday and discussed the same thing as its not possible fo rme to go abck and get this thing now.. so what i was told at the end is that you can still use deans letter and they ll accept it.. its sound fair enough to some extent but really its not a good thing to do to IMG at the eleventh hour

Digitaldoc,

Do we send the original Dean's letter or a copy in lieu of MPSE?

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (August 07, 2006 10:36 AM) :

If u got the Dean's Letter and no MSPE - send the Dean's Letter. The 'copy in lieu' is something that ERAS will do ...not we :-) g/l

Dear Digitaldoc,

Thanks for the valuable information that you post on this blog.

I have two questions about the MPSE:
1) If I do not have the MPSE but have the Dean's letter, should I check yes to MPSE on the CAF?
2) Can I send a photocopy of the Dean's letter, or does it have to be original letter?

Thanks.

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (August 07, 2006 2:01 PM) :

1. Indicate a No - see the reply I got from ERAS to verify..
2. Yes - originals :-)

hi, well my med school has given me a 3 page MSPE, but its very general. the only personalised part is my extra-curricular activities and marks in med school examinations. no comparison with peers as no rank system is present in our school.

so is this ok? or should i send a deans letter which is 1 page, and without marks, and even more generalised.

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (August 21, 2006 5:01 PM) :

Send in the MSPE :-)

Hi Digital MD.
'am still eligible to apply for J1 visa even though am out of status?do I have to go to my home country to obtain J1 visa?>

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (September 02, 2006 10:18 AM) :

Yeah - u can still apply, but to stay in the US for the moment until the match, you still need a valid status dude..violations right now may interfere with ur J1 stamping later on..

Anonymous said ... (January 11, 2007 8:23 PM) :

so for the 2008 match, ERAS would not accept the dean's letter anymore? should it have to be MSPE? pls advise. tnx - medboy from the philippines

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (January 11, 2007 10:13 PM) :

Dean's letter will be replacement for thre MSPE for a long time I think, but you do have ample time for getting a MSPE done.

Anonymous said ... (March 03, 2007 12:15 PM) :

I asked my school if they could make an MSPE for me for the 2007 Match, but they said they could not make it unless a specific institution requests it direclty. I do have a Dean´s Letter from when I graduated in 2005. Can I still use the Dean´s Letter for 2008 Match?

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (March 03, 2007 5:39 PM) :

Lotsa IMGs have this problem and ECFMG cannot do anything but still accept Dean's letters..yes it will work

Anonymous said ... (April 14, 2007 2:38 PM) :

can we get a sample of MSPE from a student/graduate?

oana said ... (April 15, 2007 10:43 PM) :

hello. i am from romania nd i have the same problem with the MSPE.i graduated in 2004 and my school cannot provide me a MSPE as demanded by the ECFGM..i mean..the graphics with the comparative evaluation, there is no such thing as comparative evaluation , percentiles, etc. what can i do for the 2008 Match? thank you

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (April 18, 2007 1:21 AM) :

All those graphs and graphics are a 'suggested ' template - dont need to have it, though would be better to have. Many people submit simply a Dean's letter in place of the MSPE - email ECFMG about this to know their latest policies. ERAS does not need MSPE for you to apply for residencies, it is something that the program directors would like to see.

ur help appreciated...
thanks ..GOD BLESS

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (May 27, 2007 4:59 PM) :

High digitaldoc, md, I´m applying for the 2008 match and couldn´t get an MSPE or dean´s letter, I got instead a letter from the secretary stating that I behaved well during medschool; will this do?....Israel Gaitan

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (July 06, 2007 2:48 PM) :

Is that the Dean's secretary ? can he/she get a stamp of approval from the Dean on that letter ? Its best to call ECFMG about such matters to clarify : (215) 386-5900

vidhu said ... (August 15, 2007 9:12 PM) :

hi digidoc, i have sent a deans letter to the ERAS and am trying to get an MSPE done....bcoz i read tht it will be available to the PDs by nov 1st and we have much more time.So can i send an MSPE later by august ending... will they upload my document even wd the deans later already uploaded??

Digidoc,
Your information helping us a lot to get enough knowledge to try for residency. I have a question on my MSPE letter. I discontinued my MD back in india last year. Now i got two dean letter from my mbbs(2001) and md(2006) and sent both of them to ecfmg. Since we have to use only one Dean letter, can you please tell which one would be better to use?

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (August 21, 2007 12:17 PM) :

They usually imply the Dean's letter from Medical school

Anonymous said ... (August 23, 2007 4:47 PM) :

digidoc,

please help me. i hav two questions to ask you. 1) i have a letter from the principal of my college in india. could that be used in lieu of a dean's letter?
2) it's not a very good letter, so do i need to send it? or can i do without a dean's letter- since ecfmg sends in a filler letter, thanks
