MORE REASONS FOR SEPTEMBER APPLICATION DEADLINE

Why Stress so much on applying on Day 1 ? There are more Reasons that you think there were. Besides the logical reason that most programs look at applications on a first-come-first-serve basis, there is another often overlooked technical reason to do so: ERAS ! Yeah - ERAS too treats applicants on a first-come-first-serve basis. You will begin to understand what I am blabbering about after you consider this fact:

ERAS begins to scan your documents and upload them to your virtual online "mailbox" on MyERAS ONLY AFTER you have applied to atleast one program and paid for it.

That's right ! To repeat with great emphasis: However early you send your documents to ERAS before September, though your documents may get scanned before, your documents get loaded to the 'mail box' for programs to download scanned ONLY when you pay (i.e. Apply) for atlteast one program - and that takes a few days, depending on the waiting list of candidates - and that can be pretty big, especially in September.

This is especially important for those people who plan to apply AFTER September 1st for various reasons - like awaiting ALL scores before applying, not completed a list of places to apply or waiting for accumulating $ to apply and stuff.

Let us labor to explain this with a sample scenario:

Suppose Melissa decides to apply on, say, September 20th - since she only completes compiling her list of residency programs by then. She hits the pay button on MyERAS and 'sends' her application. We assume that Melissa has already posted her paper documents to ERAS way back in August - Yet, on that day, only her Common-Application-Format (CAF) and Personal Statements will reach the programs - her other important documents like LORs and Dean's Letter/MSPE will be relayed to the programs AFTER ERAS digs out her documents from their scanned images pile and then loads it to the 'mail box' - which will take another 3-4 days or more depending on which part of the week you apply! (fridays are the worst - he he)

On the other hand, on the Residency Program's side, the Program Coordinator (PC) gets an alert that Melissa has applied to their program but then she notes that her application is yet incomplete since some documents cant be downloaded yet - so the PC puts the application on hold awaiting the documents. Until Melissa's documents arrive on day 3, the PC receives another 35-50 complete applications and is busy with those...while Melissa's application stays on the backburner for sometime..

While this may be especially true for highly competitive programs like Internal Medicine ..he he..for the other specialties, maybe I took the situation too far - but I hope you get the point ! Why let competition ever get the better of you ?

Do Note that once loaded, any subsequent programs that Melissa applies to will have NO such delay in receiving everything, since everything is already scanned and ready by then.

Now, What does this teach us ?

It tells us that you shoud Apply & pay for ATLEAST ONE Residency program on the first application day of September , so that ERAS starts your document scanning process and keeps them ready for your subsequent applications. I hope I drove home the point why you should be doing this even if your not ready to apply for whatever reasons - like application scores are not complete, your program list is not complete or whatever !!

For those who are ready to apply , do ahead and apply to ALL programs on day one...g/l

:-)

So, Remember Remember , the first day of September.......LOL - did anyone watch "V For Vendetta ? " ;-)

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (July 29, 2006 5:34 PM) :

Thanks Zindagani :-)

About the second comment - send in documents atleast 10-12 days before Sept 1 ! In fact - send them now if u are ready ...

arihant said ... (July 30, 2006 12:52 AM) :

hii digital doc,

i wld be taking CS on 5th sep.
should i still apply on 1 sep. even before taking the CS??or apply by 7-10 sep.?

Anonymous said ... (July 30, 2006 3:29 AM) :

hallo digitaldoc thanx for this post .. i wana know ,i have some fund problem with me ,,this year i m giving step 1 & ck . but cant take cs in 2007 ..is it cost me if i take it in early 2008 and apply eras on september 1st .....plz reply

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (July 30, 2006 6:16 AM) :

Ur Step 1 and Step 2 done ? In that case do apply anyways. Some people advise about selecting "manual transmission" of ERAS transcript to program rather than "automatic" - so that in case , god forbid, cs or step 3 is not cleared, programs won't know about it - until you clear it again and transmit the transcript. Of course the new transcript will have that as a second attempt, but still psychologically it will not bias the programs against you - like it would if they were sent a transcript that a candidate failed. Which also means that it may be better to not mention the CS exam date on ERAS ! Shall be writing a separate post later on this

arihant said ... (July 30, 2006 7:39 AM) :

yea digitaldoc,my step1 & step2CK would be done by then(by 1 sep.).

but,as my step2 CK is on early aug.,i most probably wld not have got my score by 1 sep.
can i hasten the process a bit by giving them an american address so as to cut the postal time to india?(im hoping to be in US by that time).
so that could enable me to apply by early september??

thnx

thank you said ... (July 31, 2006 10:29 PM) :

Thank you so much digitaldoc!
Your blog helps me great deal
I am taking step2 Ck on the end of August. Just want to make sure, in this case, I should also apply and pay for a program on day1?

Anonymous said ... (July 31, 2006 10:35 PM) :

hi digitaldoc:

i am so sorry that i left a bunch of the messages. i didn't realize that it does not appear at once (like in forums)

Please ignore the duplicates.
Thank you

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (July 31, 2006 11:01 PM) :

To Arihant : If you choose "automatic transmission" of transcripts - then the transcripts of ur step 2 scores will be sent to the programs the same day ur score release updates on OASIS...then it does not matter when YOU get the score..the programs will already know you your score by then. But if you choose manual transmission of transcripts - then u rather give an US address to hasten the process..

second Question: yes - do apply and apply for a program on day one :-)

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (August 01, 2006 2:58 AM) :

To the person with funding problems - i am not sure i understood your question clearly. If you take CS in 2008, it means you will only be able to participate in the 2008 match - since CS scores will not arrive before Mid-Feb 2007 and programs will not rank you unless that happens. For the 2008 match, you will be applying in Sept. 2007 ..not Sept. 2006 .. I am sorry to know about ur $$ prbs and I hope things sort out fast for u ..g/l

Anonymous said ... (August 01, 2006 6:27 PM) :

Mle-man,

please,i need your advice on what to do.I have CS result but due to take Step1 on Sept 15.Can i still apply on Sept1 or wait? what sould i do?

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (August 01, 2006 6:32 PM) :

Just apply to one program for the technical reason mentioned above - and apply to remaining programs atleast after step 1 results...

Khanna said ... (August 02, 2006 3:07 PM) :

I have my Step1 score now, and I have also scheduled my Step 2CK & 2CS dates after the 1st of Sept (in Sept & Oct, respectively).

But I have not submitted my Medical education Credentials for verification yet.

What shall I do - pls clarify. (Can I apply still?)

KHANNA.

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (August 02, 2006 5:08 PM) :

Medical credential verification is not required for applying to ERAS - BUT it is needed for ECFMG certification, which must be completed before mid-feb 2007 if you applying for the 2007 match. So, if you are planning 2007, you better start off the credential process dude...ECFMG + Med-school guys are pretty slow about it

Anonymous said ... (August 03, 2006 8:16 AM) :

hello sir,i read your all information..but still i want to know about my problem..as i will took my ck exam on 18 august and cs on 14 september...what i have to do for application?.should i apply for one programme on 1 sept.? and then after 15 september..? plz help me?

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (August 03, 2006 2:10 PM) :

Yes :-) you got that right !

Anonymous said ... (August 04, 2006 9:58 AM) :

I think that there are some factual inaccuracies in your post. First of all, documents are not sent to ERAS for scanning. They are sent to the Dean's Office designated for IMGs which is the ECFMG. Secondly, once you register in myERAS and choose the programs you need to apply to - you should select the LORs to be assigned to that program. Unless the LORs have already been scanned and listed by September 1, how then can you apply?

Georgie said ... (August 04, 2006 10:21 AM) :

Your assignments and program lists are posted at the ERAS PostOffice. The following documents along with your program lists will be available: medical school transcript, photograph, and ECFMG Status Report. We will download your program selections and assignments the next business day.

This is pasted from ECFMG web site.... it says the documents are scanned as soon as they receive it and then would be sent on the next business day!!!

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (August 04, 2006 12:29 PM) :

ABout the LORs - On MyERAS, you create a name for an LOR - like "Dr. ABC, Head of Medicine" and you merely assign that LOR NAME to the program. Once you apply to the program and pay - the appropriate LOR , corresponding to the name you provided, is scanned and uploaded....

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (August 04, 2006 12:31 PM) :

To Georgie - unfortunately they said the same the last year too. This advice comes from people who participate in the 2006 match ! There are simply too many applicants ...and its better to initiate the scanning as soon as possible by paying for atleast one program .

Anonymous said ... (August 11, 2006 1:11 PM) :

Let me see if I got this straight; so your saying that it's better to apply to one program one sept 1st and then to all the others on my list, even thought I am as ready as I'll ever be (meaning already ECFMG certified and with LORS, MSPE, etc sent to ECFMG)...if so, how long should I wait before I send the rest of the applications?

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (August 11, 2006 9:23 PM) :

No - that's not what I explained - if you are ready ..go ahead and apply to all programs - but if you are not ready with ur entire list, then apply to atleast one on day 1 ..and the rest as soon as can later on..

Anonymous said ... (August 19, 2006 11:22 PM) :

Hi DD,
thanks for all the info...I have a question that I will have 2 LOR before sept 1 but the 3rd one, I will get it on 1st week of sept (I am a 4th year medical student)...so what should I do in my case for applying on sept 1 thing...now any advice when should I apply.

Hi,

I will be getting my MBBS degree in August/September 2007 though I will be finished with my step 1 and 2 exams. Do I need to have ECFMG certification before I apply to some residency program through ERAS on September 1st, 2007?

Thanks,
Rohitha

i am finding ur post extremely useful .thank you very much and god bless.i finished step1 and step 2ck but yet to take step2 cs in october.i sent my medical school transcript, photo and Lor's on august 27th.they will probably reach by 4th or 5th.i have short list of 10 programs to apply for the time being.Do you think i should apply on september 1 st even though my documents might not have reached.????????/Please answer my query.i want ur suggestion asap.
thank you.

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (September 01, 2006 1:18 AM) :

apply to one program if it allows you to without the documents..and then apply to the rest when all documents are uploaded... :-)

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (September 09, 2006 1:51 AM) :

About ECFMG Certification and Applying to ERAS - let me repeat , you DONT need certificate to apply to resiedncy programs, you need the certificate to be on the Rank Order Lists by Mid-February of the Match year..

Anonymous said ... (September 30, 2006 3:59 AM) :

hi digital doc,
this is first time i visited this site. u r realy great ...iam a beginer..i got visa recently through GRE route for spring 2007.iwant to apply for 2007 match.iam now in confusion..
1)for applying On sep 1st .is it necessary to complete STEP1 or 2CK or 2CS?
2)score reports must be there in our hands?
3)what abt step 3?
4)how to change to h1b?

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (September 30, 2006 7:17 PM) :

Thanks for your kind comments ...
1. For applying on 1st Sept, technically you don't all those scores - but it is better to have them for more interviews.
2. You are NOT required to mention your scores on your ERAS application - the transcripts are sent to the programs by ERAS electronically..so u dont need the scores "in hand" for applying
3. Step 3 by results by early December for H1b Visas for most programs, but if a program really likes you, they might give you more time. For programs that give early prematches, often they will need to see Step 3 by the time you apply , in order to offer you a prematch with H1B
4. Changing to H1b from student visa is easy - u can do it from Canada or back from ur own country too. Shall put that up later on the Visa blog :-)

dochyd said ... (October 13, 2006 2:12 AM) :

hi digital doc
that was a fantastic post.very very useful. my case is i m planning 2 take step 1 in march/april2007/ step2 cs in may nd step 2 ck in september/october. so do u suggest me 2 apply 4 2008 match or give my step3 nd apply 4 2009?

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (October 16, 2006 3:59 AM) :

U cud apply to some even for the 2008 match, if your step 1 score is really good and u pass ur step 2 cs - however, i would suggest you that you get ur step 1 done in March (u have lotsa time for March) , speed up on step 2 CK in the next 3 months and give off Step 2 CS anytime in between in the earliest date - coz Step 2 CS only takes 15 days. Why waste a year? :-)

Anonymous said ... (November 01, 2006 9:43 PM) :

TO DIGITAL DOC
Its hard to find where to post a q to you.PLS POST UR EMAIL ADDRESS PROMINENTLY.I only have step 1 score.CK and CSA planned in jan and feb 2007.i was aiming for 2008 match but just wondering if i should see if i can start the process for 2007 match and apply to just one program as you say.I dont have much hopes but atleast I will gain some experience about the process and have my Docs scanned and ready.MY ques-how much will that cost??

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (November 02, 2006 10:02 AM) :

Hi - I am sorry about the difficulty in posting questions - I shall have a separate post in each blog explaning to drop comments. If you are aiming for the 2008 match, the applying to one program for 2007 match will not help you - the documents that are scanned will be held valid ONLY for the current Match season - to have the documents ready and scanned for the 2008 Match, ERAS will open again in July-August 2007 ..and they will not transfer documents scanned the previous year for the next years match - though I so wish that they allowed that ..good point :-)

Cost for one program - lets see..you will still end up paying for 10 programs..coz when you apply to your first program, ERAS takes away charge for 10 programs ($6 each ) ,thinking that u will be applying to atleast 10 - plus ERAS token = 75$ and other costs in sending documents to them.

Shreya said ... (June 06, 2007 11:51 PM) :

Hi Digital Doc ,
I sincerely appreciate your great service and help. I have failed in Step2CK and planning to reappear August2007. I am giving CS on July 1st week. And Step 1 Planning in November. Should I still apply on Sept1 st? Please help when to apply and how? - Shreya, Muscat

Gary S said ... (June 07, 2007 4:54 AM) :

Hey DigiDoc, I have a query. I have already given my Step1 . But I will be giving my Step 2 Ck in around early August. Assuming ECFMG reports my score by say 31 Aug, will I need to wait for the postal score to arrive at my home or it will be auto sent electronically as part of my application if I apply on Sept 1?I hope I made my point clear

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (June 07, 2007 7:14 AM) :

To Shreya: Am sorry to hear about your Step 2 CK failure, space out your studies and have rigorous schedule of note-plus-questions daily on the next study attempt :-) In your case, the most practical thing would be have all scores ready and add to your resume with research and/or US clinical experience for the next match. For this match, when you send your transcripts with Step 2 CS alone, your Step 2 CK failure would be reported too - hence applying when Step 1 scores are available would be more practical to reduce the negative-bias of the failure

To Gary S - yeah you made your point clear :-) You wont need to wait for your postal score to arrive, if you set your transcript on automatic transmission, the scores will be electronically relayed to the programs.

Gary S said ... (June 07, 2007 10:34 AM) :

Hey digitaldoc, thanks a lot.......u r a gem of a person.
I have a scenario if the Step2 score doesnt get reported by sept 1 , shud I apply on Sept 1 to 1 program with Step 1 score only or shud I wait for a few days.

Also,I will be giving my CS on 4th sept.
Will I be able to get calls....bcoz my CS result wont be out until mid-late October.

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (June 07, 2007 2:38 PM) :

Yeah - apply in that scenario too, because despite applying on Sept. 1st, it will be around 10 days average until the programs receive all your scanned documents from ERAS for download - since ERAS starts scanning candidate documents ONLY AFTER they apply and pay to the first program.

That's fine about CS - mostly Step 1 and Step 2 Ck scores are looked at

mandy said ... (July 26, 2007 11:28 AM) :

hey DD

can i make my list of programs and apply to 1/2 of them by sept 1st and depending on the response apply to more places before the end of the month........am thinking of applyin to at least 100 programs to be on the safer side

have 90 in step 1 and 97 in step 2.........will have CS result on aug 15........so most probably will be certified by sept 1

or it would be a silly thing to do.....coz applyin late means lotsa applications will reach programs before mine reaches...so what do you say???????

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (July 26, 2007 12:11 PM) :

Yes, if you going to apply to those, apply ahead in time even for backups..coz the same rules apply about 1st sept. :-)

GS said ... (July 28, 2007 4:08 AM) :

Hi DigiDoc, I thank u for all the great info u have put up.

Well I am an IMG & I just got my score report today. I feel sad and depressed at my score 88/213. I know its very bad. I wasnt expecting very high score but in early 90s atleast.
I studied only from Kaplan and FA.just like 2-3 hrs intially and then 5-6 hrs at end. I know i didnt put in my best but thats how I am.

Now is this score worth continuing with my step 2CK which is just 15 days away?Practically speaking, will I be able to get a residency in this match? My CS is scheduled on 4th Sept. My step2 ck score would be reported on 19th Sept.I dont have any observership/clerkship/research or any other USCE?

Plz advise , I am disheartened.....should I continue or should I abandon this path?

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (July 28, 2007 2:53 PM) :

88 is not that bad a score as you would think - this years match may be a little more tough for you, but I would certainly urge you to apply to places that don't need US experience strictly. And also be ready for the 2009 match with improvements to profile like US experiences / research etc. Sept 19th score reporting of ur step 2 CK too might open up more interviews - after all its all a chance ..and a chance is a chance only if you take it. BUt take a calculated one and apply to those prorams that u can call and be assured they will look at your application - and at the same time be open to the idea that 2009 may be better chance for u. AGain ..88 is not bad !

GS said ... (July 29, 2007 12:32 AM) :

Hey Thanks Digi for ur words of wisdom:)

How do I know which programs will look at my app? should I call them and tell my score ? Also where do I find phone numbers of programs? Also which programs do u think wud be a wise at my score.
Also I am planning to do observership/research after CS on sept 4th? Will it help in this year's match?

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (July 29, 2007 12:56 PM) :

Yes - you gotta call them to get their feedback and their criteria. If you already signed up for the ERAS token and got your login access to the MyERAS website, login - goto the programs list..and every individual program page will have a contact number. Yes - though, doing it earlier would have helped more, mention the future date of the observership when you apply, and then update the programs with an email when your observership begins..providing them the email and contact number of your observership sponsoring physician

sanket said ... (August 18, 2007 7:49 AM) :

thanks ur blog and advices are awesome. Please guide me as i will be ready with my all results on oct 15. and i dont have eras token yet. do u suggest to apply atleast 1 pro on sep 1 without step 2ck and cs and deans letter.I will get deans letter by sep 12th or shall i wait till sep 12th.Please guide urgent.

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (August 18, 2007 8:06 AM) :

The Deans letter/MSPE is passed on all programs only by 1st of November, hence waiting for applying until your Dean's letter is acquired will give you no advantage as far as the Dean's letter is concerned

Anonymous said ... (August 21, 2007 7:16 AM) :

hi dd..
i know with sept 1 approaching u r flooded with q's..here goes mine:)
my lors would be reaching eras around 23rd aug, even though they already have some previously sent lors which i dnt really want to upload.the new ones should be ready for uploading max by 3-4th sept.should i apply then?or still apply to a few progs on1st sept with not so good lors and apply to the others later?pl help me out

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (August 21, 2007 7:32 AM) :

Apply to a single prog on Sept 1 to initiate scanned documents to be posted to the ERAS post-office and then apply the others on the date you get the LORs you want, since its a question a mere 2-3 days more and your other LORs sound better.

Blogger Alfredo said ... (October 17, 2007 6:56 AM) :

Hi digitaldoc, I am a IMG from south america. My expected graduation date is on december 2007. If I want to match for 2009, should I apply with step1,2, ck, cs and one LOR on september 1? I want to get 2 LORs at least, can I update my file by november 2008 with more LOR?

Blogger Digitaldoc, MD said ... (October 17, 2007 9:38 AM) :

An application is considered incomplete without at least 3 LORs - hence you need to have 3 LORs at least when you apply in Sept.
