HOSPITALS THAT OFFER OBSERVERSHIPS / EXTERNSHIPS : LIST

I would rather that you refer to my United States Clinical Experiences List Blog for the updated list of Externships , Observerships and Electives by State

Contact these early in the game - coz' slots get filled pretty fast ! Often you will need to pay them - but then ..wut the heck - if you're anyways spending 6000-7000$ who cares for an extra grand ! Some places may insist that you arrange your own Malpractice insurance, some pay arrange it for you but you gotta pay, while some places may not bother you with that all ...

Sample email to use for applying for observerships :

Shall keep updating this list !

Points-to-Note:
1. Policies change all the time - places that offered observerships before - may not offer today, so call !
2. These places have a limit on the number of students they take - so act fast !
3. The best time to do an observership is BEFORE you apply to ERAS - how else will it show on your application ? and How else will you get those US LORs on time ? Act fast ..if you are planning the 2008 match, still act fast :-)
4. Contacts matter a lot for getting observerships / externships - use them ! Resident friends, physician relatives, MD friends of your favorite masters/phD profs. etc

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (May 23, 2006 8:43 PM) :

I would encourage u to do an observership before u apply ..or alteast BY the time you are applying..or if none of these can work out..atleast try to have it FIXED at the time you apply, so that you can mention it on ur ERAS application :-)

I know a dude who recently got a preliminary surgery position - and shall be featuring him and his advice on my blog shortly. keeping checking back :-)

What a site!!! its excellent!!!

what about working in a private clinic under a medical practitioner ? is this good? and how long should USCE should be?minimum?

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (June 24, 2006 2:12 AM) :

Miminum time for USCE - more the better..some programs wanna see a minimum of a month, some 3 and some even 6 !! while others may say 1 year !

a private doc is still better than None...but would still recommend finding big places to do it..

g/l and thnx for ur comments :-)

and shd i apply to different universities for 2 courses or do it in the same uni...plz guide..
thank u

Anonymous said ... (August 16, 2006 8:41 PM) :

Hi,
I am doing an observership at present for a month.Should i state is as an CLINICAL EXPERIENCE or as VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE.

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (August 17, 2006 3:12 PM) :

surely worth the effort and $$ spent ! coz besides the experience you also will get good US LORs...!!

Different specialties - yeah you can apply ..even in the same university - but that could be a risk if you are applying for totally opposite specialties ..like surgery and medicine , etc.

s.khan said ... (August 24, 2006 7:16 AM) :

hi..
how abt doing a clinical elective in internal medicine at a research centre's hospital?is it goood enough like the ones taken at university hospitals/medical schools?which one wld be better?

Anonymous said ... (August 29, 2006 10:21 AM) :

Hi Digital doc,
Thanks for such an awesome blog!!!I have a quick question. Since, I am doing a masters out here, I didnt have the time for university USCE, so i opted to shadow a private practioner at his clinics on weekends. How do i put this in my ERAS application?? DO i mention it as observership or what..am kinda confused???

any help will be greatly appreciated...

Anonymous said ... (September 02, 2006 1:40 PM) :

Hi Digi-doc,

I have completed 4 months of observerships in an IM program (may/may not be offering any more obs now...), which is my 1st choice specialty and program. Its a very comp program, but was wondering, if i can/should do any more obs in IM, and what about doing obs in other "backup" specialties, ie. FM, Psych, OB/Gyn, etc., to which im applying to, as well, in addition to IM?...

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (September 02, 2006 1:58 PM) :

If IM is what you want, try in IM first, or else FP observership would also work for IM programs...

Anonymous said ... (September 08, 2006 7:25 PM) :

hey some places require ecfmg certificate for doing an observership!!....

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (September 08, 2006 8:49 PM) :

And about mentioning Observerships on ur ERAS Application - list them as "Work Experience" - in fact within the application itself, u will see an instruction in that section which asks you to mention clinical experience as work experience

About ECFMG Certification for Observerships - yeah, I have covered that in the "Types of USCE" section

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (September 09, 2006 1:34 AM) :

Regarding S.khan's Q about Clinical Electives in a research center - any clinical elective is great in a well-known US institution !

Anonymous said ... (September 20, 2006 5:15 PM) :

Hi digidoc
Can you please tell some places in CA( The S.F. / bay area ) which offer externship or obsevership.
Thanks a lot for your help.

Anonymous said ... (October 18, 2006 3:48 PM) :

hi digidoc,
I have passed step 1 and 2 ck, but unfortunately failed cs,pl advice will this lower my chances of getting interview..... what if i retake cs within a few days and clear it........will it still be a negative point for me.and also pl give me list of colleges offering observership in DC, virginia area.......thanks

Anonymous said ... (November 03, 2006 6:49 AM) :

dear digidoc,
i am terrribly confused..giving my step 2 in march/april..and plan top stay back for observership till my results are out..don't know where and how to begin. do u have any list of hospitals in newyork which offer free observership to IMG.i am currently doing voluntary medical social work too. do i apply now? have scored 88 in step 1.
please guide me...i would be truely greatful.
thanking you

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (November 03, 2006 12:18 PM) :

Hi people...

Answer 1: CA is generally tougher for observerships , as i hear. if meeting faculty wont help, last option is to go thru gmcgroup.org

Answer 2: Do retake ur CS at the earliest date u can ..and possibly at the same center, coz its highly likely the cases wont change. i am trying to compile as many places for observership as i can - unfortunately there is no 'IMG-friendly' observership list, its based on past history and thru friends :-)

Answer 3: Beging to look around for observerships now - there is really no formal process, its writing emails to faculty from surrounding hospitals and asking if u can meet them about their research work ..and then also bringing out the topic of a possible observership when u meet up with them ..

but rule number - dont mess up USMLE scores...those come first !

Anonymous said ... (November 03, 2006 12:57 PM) :

Hi digitaldoc,

i wanted to ask u if observerships in canadian hositals might help for residency application in US??...im an IMG;currently in toronto;preparing for my USMLEs;going in for the 2008 match...THANX..

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (November 10, 2006 11:09 PM) :

LA observership hospitals anyone ?

Canadian Hospital observerships sure will be good too - but pray dont let that hamper ur USMLE prep - scores are king...

Hello Digital Doc,

This year I had few resdiency interviews. My more intrest is in internal medicine but I did got one resdiency interview for the preliminary position in surgery. Now I have got an offer from the same surgical program for an externship. Is doing an externship in the month of feburaay help me in getting a residency. I am thinking whether to join the externship or not. Will it help me in getting a higher position in the Rank Order list

Thanks

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (January 27, 2007 5:15 PM) :

being after an externship after a interview is good news about real interest in you - that externship will not only be used to evaluate you, but also to give you a head start into their program before residency begins..

Anonymous said ... (February 19, 2007 8:05 AM) :

hello digitaldoc

this is a great blog.
i came to know from your blog about surgery sub-internship at uni. og washington.
can you give me more information about it.
they say this is for those who are interested in surgery prilim at their uni. but what if i also want to apply at other places .will i get recco. letteres.

please guide me.

Anonymous said ... (March 19, 2007 11:11 AM) :

I am interested in research in US. I wanted to ask that are there specific research programs where you can apply just like clinical elective programs or else you have to visit each hospitals website and email them requesting for research. if there are any programs please post them .. thanks

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (March 23, 2007 2:01 PM) :

Answer 1: yes they will give you reco letters, since they too know that they wont be able to absorb everyone that does it at their place.

Answer 2: Thankx dude for the suggestion. I have been wanting to put up a research places list since a long time, just have not found time. I assure you I will get on to it very soon.

Anonymous said ... (April 25, 2007 9:47 AM) :

Hey its a great website. I have been able to find all the things I wanted to know about USMLE. Keep up the good work. I am in final year rite now and i am planning to do 9 months clinical electives and I have applied at vaious places for that. I wanted to ask what will look better in an application "9 months clinical experience" or "6 months clinical experience plus 3 months research experience".

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (April 25, 2007 3:25 PM) :

Research experience is worth it if you can get some publications out of it, which is unlikely for 3 months time - or a big shot place like Johns Hopkins or a big name in the field - if that cannot work out, then 3 months more of electives is what I would do..

Anonymous said ... (May 14, 2007 9:17 PM) :

Hello.

Can you post the List of Hospitals
that offer Regidency?
(If possible, by state.)

Also, list of hospitals that don't offer Regidency?

It will be a great help.
Thank you.

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (May 14, 2007 10:34 PM) :

Hi - am already maintaining such a list at IMG Friendly Residency Programs Blog

Anonymous said ... (May 15, 2007 7:41 PM) :

Thank you, Digitaldoc.

Then, what about the list of hospitals that don't offer Residency?

Do you have any idea of where that information is at?

Thank you.

Hi I am doiong masters in public health in NIU in dekalb. I have not yet taken my step 1 amplanning to atk it in jn 2008. I know a psychiatrist who stays near the campus. He works in a non teaching hospital. My question is can i do observorship or externship under him without completing my step 1and give my step 1 after completing observorship. Please do reply at the earliest.

Blogger Digitaldoc, MD said ... (November 6, 2007 12:14 AM) :

There are no official national rules for observerships - they are informal positions - which may be made into official programs at some universities. Often some physicians will allow you to do so, provided the facility they work at has no problems. So talk to him and see what he/she says - USMLE may not be needed
