HOSPITALS OFFERING CLINICAL ELECTIVES / CLERKSHIPS TO INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL STUDENTS
Clinical Electives / Clerkships / Visiting Student Programs for International Medical Students
These rotations can be done by International / Foreign Medical Students who are currently enrolled in Medical Schools - mostly 4th Year students . If you are already out medical school and are looking for rotations, look up the links on the side-bar for a list of Observerships / Externships instead
Almost all of these programs will provide you with a visa letter to show at the US embassy to help you get the Visitor's Visa required for the elective. Some will want a J1 visa (Remember that this J1 visa DOES NOT have a 2-year home country requirement - so don't freak out ! - go for it baby ;-) ) while some will allow you to do it on a visitors (B1) visa too.
These rotations are somewhat easier to get and carry far more value than observerships for residency applications - so guys, if you are still in Medical school and have decided on USMLE and Residency, clinical electives in desired specialties are strongly recommended. They will be worth every cent and dollar spent ! I agree this list needs better arrangement - that's why I shall soon be coming up with the list on a separate blog dedicated to USCE and classified state-wise. Until then, please do bear with me.

hi digidoc...
im still in a medical school and i want to know what will be best for me at this time-observership,externship,electives or working with a private practitioner; and am i eligible to do all this...
plz reply back because im a little confused
Digitaldoc, MD said ... (January 20, 2007 4:42 PM) :
electives / clerkships are for 4th year medical students - as listed on this article. Others are for Graduates of medical school - working with private practitioner - in most cases they will want you to be graduates who are certified by the ECFMG (graduates with step1,2ck and cs done + medical credentials and diploma verified )

Hi I DD, wanted to ask u, Whether an IMG- a Grad, can do electives or clerkships.? like I have seen people saying that I am an IMG doing elective rotations at bla bla hosp,, and when I ask them they reply nothing. So can an IMG do elective rotations?
Thanks
Digitaldoc, MD said ... (January 21, 2007 11:58 PM) :
The term IMG is often loosely used - should suggest grads, but international medical students too use it sometimes. On the other hand, the term 'electives' too is loosely used by IMGs - some might use it for externships !
Electives / Clerkships are usually only for 3rd or 4th year medical students. some sites like gmcgroup.org are known to get IMGs enrolled provisionally in carribbean schools, on paper, to get you that medical student status and do electives - but not sure of that.

hi DD.
can electives/clerkship be done when one is doing internship...im asking u this because im in final year and i dnt think that i'll be able to take out time for electives this year...what do you suggest....
Digitaldoc, MD said ... (January 25, 2007 11:34 AM) :
yes - they are normally done during medical school internships of your home-countries - taking 3 months off for externships and getting credit for it towards your home medical school

Hey Doc, im a U.S citizen, currently studying at China Medical University. They say you have to do a year of internship and i could do it in China or the U.S. Would i be able to substitute that for some kind of externship or observership in the U.S?
Digitaldoc, MD said ... (February 13, 2007 10:18 AM) :
To S. Khan:
Congrats on getting A Harvard Elective - that's a big name opportunity for u !
5000$ is a lot of money - agreed, and if you can arrange for it by borrowing, it is still worth it. But if you are feeling more inclined towards medicine, you can wait till you get a medicine elective at other places that you might have applied to. Surgery, too, eventually, is a clinical elective.
To China Medical University Student - what they are asking for in internship rotations - so 4th year clinical electives / clerkships in US will qualify more than observerships and externships (which are after medical school is completed)

Hello Yuvnish - am maintaining tips about USCE on a separate blog - click here for USCE list & Tips for IMGs
hi digi
most of medical schools r asking for mal practice insurance
how to get that?!
hey digitalblog first of all i would like to thank you for helping all the medical students. My quetion is that i have done five months of electives in usa after completin 3 months of psm internship in india but now i am back and i got to know that i have a repeat for 5 month for med and sur internhip? so cant my college consider my rotations done in usa? whom should i go and ask if i am doing my internship in mumbai?
AS far as I know, medical schools in mumbai, India generally accept 3 months of electives abroad as part of their cirriculum, which means you only need to do 9 months of ur own med-school internship. But this arrangement is confirmed with the medical school BEFORE doing the electives after getting a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the concerned University at ur home medical schoo. You could approach your medical school university (MUHS) for that.
