AFTER APPLYING : MAXIMIZING INTERVIEW CHANCES

Tons of applications, hundreds of good scoring candidates, lotsa strong credentials and yet the Program Director's gotta choose who makes it for the interviews. Choose not just the best of what they got, but also choose candidates with a good likelihood of actually ranking their program - coz' as I explained on another post, the interview quotas are limited by time and budget.
It may pay to remain proactive even after you applied to residency programs, instead of letting only programs and fate work with your ERAS application ;-) No matter how unbiased a selection process maybe, personality and soft skills do play their role in all walks of life ! Here are some steps you could take AFTER YOU APPLY, to push your luck into improving your chances for that residency interview (...After all, aren't we all in the business of improving chances of landing that Interview , so that we have a chance to show-case what we got & earn a spot on the program's Rank-Order List?)
1. 3 to 4 weeks after you apply, call up programs that you did not hear back from at all, and inquire about the "status of your application". This makes the program coordinator look up your application again, if not already looked at. If a decision of a reject was already taken and not communicated, they will let you know. If no decision was taken , your calling may at least prompt most of the programs to have a another better look at your application . A friend of mine with low scores in the 2006 match, will vouch for this strategy, which helped him get more interviews than he anticipated. It definitely may help to keep you in the spotlight, considering that there will be hundreds or thousands of applications received ....and not everyone will be calling to check in. ( Of course, you may email - but I would rather that you call. ) A note of warning though, if the program clearly communicates that they would not like people emailing or calling back to check status, refrain from doing so.
2. If you manage to get your first or another useful US clinical / research experience AFTER you apply - like say an externship or observership or a publication, etc, sending an email to all programs informing them about them would make many programs, if not all, give your application a second look in a positive light. Thus, just because you finished applying does not mean you should stop seeking resume-enhancing US experiences.
3. Calling up programs becomes especially relevant as the interview season nears the end in Dec-Jan-Feb of the match year. Why ? Remember that a lot of strong candidates either cancel excess interviews at the last moment or simply don't show up at all (which I think is very impolite ). Secondly as programs start giving out prematches, other programs see more 'match withdrawals' of candidates they had already interviewed. Unmet Interview Quotas and match cancellations put the programs at risk of having some seats unmatched - and trust me - as much as we hate to the post-match scramble, the programs themselves hate that too ! Towards the end of the season, there may not be enough time to send off formal invites to candidates on their list - and if you happen to call in such a situation - Bingo ! :-)
Hmmm...having said so, these approaches are especially relevant to slightly disadvantaged candidates like those low scores, no USCE, etc. But again, please please please do not overdo it and bug the programs enough to hate you !

Yes, quiet a few people use that approach - that's like a live recommendation letter ;-) Leave it to the person to decide what to say ..they do it good :-)

Hey Buddy!!
Thanks for this excellent website.
you have made life easier for so many people.
just one query...
i've sent all my applications on september 1st and have selected automatic transmission of my USMLE transcript.
But the ERAS post office is showing it as 'not uploaded yet'.
Today is 6th...how long should I wait before calling up ECFMG?
I guess many programs aren't downloading my applications as they are not able to see my transcript.
please do reply urgently, as this is causing some anxiety.
thanks to you in advance.

THough I feel they are mostly delayed by the backlog due to the long weekend, you should go ahead and call them to confirm...g/l
Digitaldoc, MD said ... (September 07, 2006 10:50 AM) :
This is from the ERAS section on the ECFMG website :
"Alert Notice Effective 9/6/06: We are currently experiencing technical difficulties with uploading USMLE transcripts to the ERAS PostOffice and are working to correct this issue. USMLE transcripts will be uploaded to the ERAS PostOffice as soon as this issue is resolved. Thank you for your patience"
So relax , wait and watch :-)

HI, I would like to know what exactly should I say to the programs I contact by phone. Who should I call, the secretary? or the program director?. Freida always gives you both numbers. Thank you so much for your help
Digitaldoc, MD said ... (September 22, 2006 1:22 AM) :
Call the Program Coordinator/secretary :
After the usual greetings, tell them that you were wondering about your application status and that you are very keen on being interviewed at their program.
Anonymous said ... (October 02, 2006 6:46 PM) :
hi
please tell if programs do not review the applications which are not ECFMG certified.i am about to get certification by next week so shud i call programs telling this and asking my application status.
Digitaldoc, MD said ... (October 02, 2006 6:56 PM) :
ery few keep that condition - but in case of too many applications, some programs might decide to first look at applications that are more 'complete' & certified- if u have already got all ur steps results, then all programs have already been notified about ur status change, if u had chosen automatic transmission of transcripts.
In any case, I would still suggest u keep the practice of updating programs about every status / credential improvement via emails or phone, atleast for the programs that are really really important for u
Anonymous said ... (October 05, 2006 9:31 AM) :
Hi Digitaldoc,
I applied to many programs without my personal statement. That was more than a week back. I eventually got my PS ready, and sent it to all programs today. Should I email them about it, or will they know when an application is complete?
Thanks.
Digitaldoc, MD said ... (October 05, 2006 12:43 PM) :
Yeah ..please do that :-) g/l - or esle atleast do it for programs that have not downloaded ur personal statement - u can tell that from the "track applications" link on ERAS

Digitaldoc, MD said ... (October 15, 2006 10:39 PM) :
with decent scores and a good CAF you shud still apply this year - but i suppose you might have already applied in Sept..jst make sure that ur CS result will come on time to get u ECFMG certified before the middle of Feb 2007

ur comments helped me in my usmle steps & now i look for your advise for residency.I applied to 95 im programs.. so far got 1 interview only.my cred. 92/87/cs step3 all passed in first attempt, no usce, us lors.. after waiting for iv i have now started applying for FP.. ARE my credentials good ENOUGH for fp..& is it too late to apply..rest i follow what u write on your blog
thanks
Digitaldoc, MD said ... (October 25, 2006 2:19 AM) :
Whoa ! lotsa questions all the same time..arrite :
Answer 1: Yes - "on hold" status thats a possibility. Did you email them? Do maintain periodic email contact - say every 3 weeks till u get a definite response . Phone calls may not always be helpful coz they may be flooded with phone enquiries.
Answer 2 : IF you are applying for Internal Medicine, you are pretty late for this 2007 Match, but if money is not a problem, you can take that chance....
Answer 3 : Changing LOR assignments on ERAS usually does not help - it is better to fax the new LOR to the programs after writing an email about it and if they agreee to see it.
Answer 4: Not too late to apply to FP yet...u can still do so :-) Some programs look at apps from November onwards, so do so before Nov. begins. Hope this helps..g/l

Hi!
I was wondering when we give our rank order list, do we give one for each speciality applied or is it a general one?
Digitaldoc, MD said ... (November 02, 2006 9:52 AM) :
To Deepti :
It might do good to apply to more Community programs in FP and Peds - if IM was the bulk of ur apps
About ROL -
Yes, just one Rank Order List per candidate for ALL your programs intervieweed regardless of specialty

Hey DigitalDoc ....You are a STAR !!!
I have found your posts helpful for a long long time.
I have a question....
I know it is obvious that we should rank University prog higher than community programs....for various reasons.........
1)Am I right in thinking that university programs offer better job oppurtunities after completing residency...
2) Also is the difference between university program and university affiliated program HUGE.
Thanks
Ambika
Digitaldoc, MD said ... (November 07, 2006 11:12 PM) :
The biggest attraction for University programs is better chances for getting fellowships. And it may be true that job opportunities are better after residency too - but does not mean that community hospitals do not get good job offers - after all it depends also on how much u have trained urselves (like procedures learnt and performed) during the residency.
Difference between Univ and Univ. affiliated not too big for fellowships, coz even Univ. affiliated residencies do have good exposure to research opportunities...varies from program to program. Interviews shud help u assess that.

DigitalDoc,
I really enjoy reading your columns..They have been great help. Now I am in need of your advice.
Scores 225 - Step 1 - 2nd try (Failed Once)
222 - Step 2 - 1st try
Passed CK
Australian Medical graduate, currently doing a prelim IM year in CA - Have a CA authorization letter.US Green card holder.
My goal was to try and get into Radiology with backups in IM & Surgery.
I have applied to a lot of programs and have only rejections to show far. I am certain that a fail on step 1 is killing my application. Any thoughts on what I should do?
Disappointed,
Australian Doc...
Digitaldoc, MD said ... (November 23, 2006 1:31 AM) :
Increasingly many programs want to see a pass on the first attempt and that could have affected your application. I would still ask you to call up all the programs that you have NOT heard from to get a response. Also, many IMGs apply to more than 70 IM programs..was that your number too ? Your Prelim Year should certainly count as a great US experience. Asking your attendings to call up / email some programs in CA where they know people should help too. Do let us know how it goes. I do hope things work out - god has wierd ways of making them work out that we mere humans cannot comprehend easily. g/l mate.

hi am a fresh graduate from india.my scores are 95 and 96..csa results are expected in december..have applied for 60 internal medicine programs..have not got a single call...have no observerships or research experience...i need a visa...j1 or h1...
can i wait for this year's match or is the game over?
depressed....
Digitaldoc, MD said ... (November 24, 2006 10:31 PM) :
I am sorry to hear that and unfortunately that scenario has been common this year. US Clinical Experience seems to be a major factor this year and lotsa guys with lower scores have had calls due to good USCE and Resulting US LORs..did u apply for FP too ? Applying to some lower end FP programs maybe advisable, but as we all know, there can never be guarantees in this match gamble. We can do what's in our hands in such situations and leave the rest to our maker's judgement :-) Call programs u applied too, call other lower program with lower requirements to see if they will accept some new applications with ur profile, apply to some FP programs (after first calling) or even Psych/neuro. Try to work on getting some US clinical experience too.
Despair not, what's best for us is not in our hands always. Patience & Faith. What's worst ? that u may not match this year but with bigger chances next year if u start working on grabbing USCE and Step 3 from right now.

Hi, Thank you so much for this site!
I have a question about second visits. What exactly do candidates do on second visits to programs? Is it an informal repetition of the first interview? I am a bit nervous about re-visiting a program I really like, and doing something stupid, thereby ruining my chances there. There is a lot of info out there on how to conduct yourself during the initial interview, but I couldn't find anything much about seconds. Would you mind helping me out please?
Digitaldoc, MD said ... (January 29, 2007 2:48 PM) :
No need to be nervous about Second visits - they are lot more fun. Just take a fresh batch of questions with you, request a tour of a particular facility that interests you, and also a specific faculty with an interesting background that you did not meet before..for all you know a second visit might also land you a prematch offer right on the spot....has happened :-) On the second visit, its like you are interviewing the program rather than being interviewed - ball's in your court ;-)

Hi Digitaldoc,
I have tried to use the telephone approach last season, unfortunately every program that I called told me that they don't tell us the status of application through telephone calls.I also tried to email them and there were very few reply telling me that it's still in process.I finally got 4 interviews. The interviews went very well but I didn't match. What should I do next time.Thank you.
Digitaldoc, MD said ... (May 23, 2007 2:37 PM) :
Many will tell you - some may not tell you , email them in that cases..but make sure you dont get on their nerves with too much heckling :-)
My ex-roomate called up many, got status updates and was able to land 8 interviews after calling - it sure is a matter of luck too , wuts in our hands is to try :-)

Dear Dear Dear Digital Man,
Love what you are doing on this site...we finally have some nice site to get a complete picture of Steps and Residency issues....Keep up the good work.
I have step1/2 85/82, CSA passed, step 3 in Oct 2007...In 2005, I did residency in General surgery from July to Nov 2005...I had to resign from that due some personal reasons.....Now i am ready to apply for IM or Peds for 2008, need some guidance from you about my chances this year...I have a LOR from the PD of my programme..but rest are from my country...Trying to get some Externship to get more USCE...tell me, Can my resignation put some Negative effect on my chances for IM?? Thanks Man again for such a wonderful package of information in this website...:)
Digitaldoc, MD said ... (June 07, 2007 7:21 AM) :
I am feeling very very very endeared ...hehe
Well...it you can make the resignation a good thing or at least do some damage control,if you put it on your Personal statement and the interview, that a big part of leaving the program coz' you realized that you were a medicine person and not a surgery person. It can be a negative thing, if the programs do not like the reason you had to leave, but then the LOR from your PD of the Surgery program can help there :-) If you are on good terms with the previous PD, you might as well use his contacts to land you a medicine externship in the same place...hmmm..jst a thought

dear digidoc,
actually i m a bit nervous even to say this. the bad part is my step1 score itz 83. i prepared for the exam for just 3months i totally underestimted it.
i know that i can improve it in next step.
i want suggestion, would it be a positive point to have very good score in step2 ck or its just over because of my poor score in step1.
would they consider my improvement or not ...plz help me with.
Digitaldoc, MD said ... (June 09, 2007 3:06 PM) :
A 83 on the step 1 is below average, but not the end of the story
- take your time for step 2 CK, get used to the long questions, solve the question banks as seriously as you study the notes
- dont worry about 2008 match, get the scores right first
- a better bet for you could be good step 2 CK scores, US clinical / research experience and applying on time for 2009 match with step 2 cs completed too..
- take heart in the fact that scores below 80 get in residencies too, of course with other additions on resume as I jst mentioned :-) g/l
Dear Digitaldoc,
I am an old IMG with USCE, low scores, US LORS, I applied broadly , recieved 5 rejects so far .... no IV yet.... getting anxious as I need to make travel arrangements....I have a return ticket to travel back to US ....looks kinda naive if I tarvel without any IV ....your valuable advice is appreciated....
hi digidoc !!
i am a big fan of ur site .
i have score of step1 80(2nd attempt), step2 80, step2cs passed and ecfmg certified , and doing observership in usa and also sent 2 US lor to eras and will give my step 3 in nov 1st week .i have applied to almost 150 colleges(im + fp). i have got 7 rejections so far. i am very tensed what if i dont get a interview call.plz do tell me what else should i do to get interviews.. do reply ....
hi digidoc,
you are doing a great job!i wonder how u r able to reply to all those Mr//Ms Usmle Confuseius 24/7...:-)count me one among them...i am 75/94/pass/all first attempt/ecfmg certified/grad3yrs//1mon usce/no need of visa..should i take step3 now (coz of low step1) or get some more usce.?...got a couple of ivs till now..
thank u so much in advance...
may god give u all that u wish...
Honey.
Answer 1: Does the travel ticket have deadline ? Hold on until November, more responses come until then too! g/l
Answer 2: Hi - Yes the competition is intense, and with limited choices for IMGs tp apply to, increases the competition. Besides the tips on this post, :
1. Apply to prelim / transitional programs in IM/FP too after first calling if your credentials qualify
2. Apply to combined specialties with IM and FP too, which see lower competition
3. When you apply, concentrate more on number of positions in the program...more seats is more chance, like I said here
To Honey, More USCE would be advisable - your step 2 ck is strong but number of USCE months are low - try to get more of those and continue studying for USMLE Step 3 during the course and take it when confident
