What State to Choose for Pre-Residency USMLE Step 3 CCS?

For those of you who haven't yet entered into a residency program but would like to take the test either because:

- you wish to get over with it before residency or
- for the H1b Visa,

here are some states that you are eligible to select while registering from the FSMB site:

  • Connecticut
  • Maryland
  • Nebraska
  • South Carolina
  • South Dakota

Connecticut is a time-tested state for registering to sit for the Step 3, hence recommendable :-).
Eligibilities may change, Click here to see the list of states and their requirements. The other states have additional requirements such as completion of 1 or two years of post-graduate training in the US before being eligible - which essentially means that you can register with them only after starting residency.

Q. Do you have to take the Step 3 in the SAME STATE that you registered for the test at ?

A.
No - you can take it at any Prometric test center where it is offered

Q. Do you have to do your residency / Fellowship in the SAME STATE that you registered for / took Step 3 ?

A. No - you can do you residency in any state, irrespective of the state you registered for while taking the test

i just checked the fsmb website for eligibility criteria of the different states and according to that, the following states don't require us to have done any post graduate training or have licensure to apply for step 3 :

Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Maryland, Nebraska, Nevada, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia

if there is any confusion u can call at (817) 868 4041 and ask...

i hope i am not missing something here.....if anyone learns anything more about the requirements in these states please correct me :)

Following is the explanation for all the comments which are unanswered, yet

1. You can not take step 3 after CS. You need to be ECFMG certified to take step 3. So you need passing scores on all step 1, step 2 CS as well step 2 CK.
2. I just registered with Connecticut for step 3. I DO NOT have residency experience in US. I am just an ECFMG certified.
3. Once you fill online part of an application on FSMB and pay your fees, you will be directed for the page which is your "confirmation of Identity". you sign this page, affix passport size photo, notarized with any bank official or who is authorized for notery and send this page to FSMB, Dallas, TX. Once approved, you will get an email within 3 to 5 business days and then you can see your "step 3 scheduling permit" on FSMB under "candidate website".
4. You can register for your step 3 with any US state regardless of your initial registration state by going to prometric website. The rest of the procedure is identical to step 1, step 2 CK.

Hope it helps.
