Breast Feeding Puts USMLE Step2CK on the News
After NBME denied the disabled exam candidate and a mother, Ms. Sophie Currier, extra break time to express milk for her kid on the USMLE Step 2 CK, she went to court. Initially the court denied her a preliminary injunction that would have given her additional break time for her to pump breast milk. But after a appeal, ,the court agreed and granted her the petition. NBME now plans to appeal and reverse the motion.
Here's NBME's official statement on the matter of Breast Feeding during the exam.
- Yes, Breast Feeding during the Exam is allowed
- Additional arrangements are made for disabled individuals - like splitting exam over two days, permission to carry food during the exam, etc.
Ms. Currier presented breast-feeding as a constitutional right that cannot be denied. Hmmmm...
Any thoughts ?

This whole breast-feeding thing is out of control. I'm a single female who chose not be pregnant during MEDICAL SCHOOL and finish school before I went on and thought about something major to do such as motherhood. I honestly feel like if this woman were to get extra time to feed her child, then I would be punished for not having a child, since I would be allowed less time than her. I am tired of people getting extra time and consideration because they have children. Why punish those who were getting their priorities straight in medical school?
If that were the logic for argument - then how about maternity leaves during residency when many medicos also reach an age to start a family ? Should not those be banned too for not getting 'priorities right' ?
Go Sophie!
There are mothers in Medical School who DO have their priorities right. This is the 21st century and women CAN and DO have careers. Some even have second careers, which many medical schools prefer. If you're not a parent yet or choose not to be one, you have NO idea how wonderful it is. And if you've never breastfed, you have NO idea how painful it is to go 8 hours without expressing breastmilk...which is time consuming.
