A "Second Match" Versus a Scramble ?
It's rather humorous and possibly bordering to the point of being ridiculous to wind up such a systematic, scientific and a sophisticated system like the residency Match with something as crude and almost barbaric like the Post-Match Scramble !
Indeed, back in 2005, a proposal was made to replace the scramble with a more saner "second match" instead, but the NRMP board of directors declined to pass a positive vote on that one. Though medical students widely supported the idea, program directors, institutional officials and student affairs staff were uncomfortable with the idea due to implementation problems. As this archived news release puts it:
"Among the most commonly noted problems were the later Match Day (April 1); requiring unfilled programs to participate in phase 2; and not releasing the outcome of phase 1until the conclusion of phase 2. Although the NRMP Board elected not to implement a second match, it directed staff to pursue additional improvements—similar to the dynamic unfilled positions list—for the post-Match Scramble"
I would have loved to see a second match too. What would be better than the scramble if not a second match ? I am sure NRMP can come up with options to the scramble - like probably having the programs rank additional "phone-interviewed-only" candidates on a secondary Rank order list to reduce the burden of the unmatched positions nightmare ..well..just an idea anyways.
Scramble ...Hmmm...the Residency scramble is NOT the first thing that comes to my mind when I hear that word - it's rather these poor eggs I think about ..LOL..enjoy this video clip to smoke off some stress ;-)
