The "NRMP MATCH TRICK" - or is it ?
The problem with my digitaldoc2002@gmail.com inbox is that I am finding it next to impossible to reply to, and at times even read, each one of the daily 30-50 emails and/or blog comments I receive. But hell - who am I to complain, at least the situation ain't as bad as God's Inbox...;-) Not that I am comparing myself to God - and surely not claiming legal status as God - as this dude from Mumbai did !
Recently, too many emails had a subject line asking me about the so called "NRMP MATCH trick" - and like true men of science, let us see what comes out of this one.
Note: This post was written during the 2007 Match season and results survey undertaken after the match results were out then showed that this 'trick' did not have any predictive value. I shall hold another survey this year too as a final nail on the coffin ! So, read if you want for amusement purposes - and while some candidates do not want to to try this during the match wait time, to avoid any unnecessary anxiety, I must disclaim any responsibility for stress-induced sicknesses ;-)
The hypothesis of the trick is that it is possible to determine a candidate's match status BEFORE the official match release date using these steps:
1. Login to the NRMP account
2. After you logged in, you should see two links that say "Unfilled programs" - one on the left vertical menu and another small text link at the bottom of the main page area.
3. Now click on t
he link at the bottom - if you get logged out after you click on that bottom link, then as per the claimers of this trick, it implies you have matched at some residency program.
Now, that almost seems plausible, coz' if a person is already matched, there is no need why that person should have a list of Unfilled places in the first place. A justified rumor always spreads faster than a hollow one right ? ;-).
Here are some facts that make me 99% sure this so called trick carries no water at all and is false:
1. Clicking on the link on the bottom is BOUND TO LOG YOU OUT - as long as the link points to a folder on the System Administrators account (which would need a separate login) while the one on the top points to a link on the candidates web-folder itself, and would not need a separate login process)
Comparing the link URL pointers -
Specifically, the bottom link points to :
services.nrmp.org/R3/Sysadmin/MyReports/blah-blah-blah
WHile the link of the left menu points to:
services.nrmp.org/R3/Applicant/MyReports/blah-blah-blah
So, as long as you clicking to links that point to the same Applicant folder, you will naturally NOT be logged out, that's how the Internet works. To know Where to look for the pointing URL of those links on your NRMP account, on the status bar of your Internet Browsers, Click here for a Screenshot.
2. Some people with no interviews at all and were registered with the NRMP get logged out too !
3. A email I got on this issue was that the link to the unfilled program list might have a code specific to the candidate - for example the link code for the unfilled program list looks like this:
CFID=1&CFTOKEN=1D0E9DC1-3228-4CAE-BFA86A605061A28E"
i.e he meant the last garbled looking suffix : "1D0E9DC1-3228-4CAE-BFA86A605061A28E"
Which again is incorrect. Notice the "CFID" and "CFTOKEN" combination used for the link - these codes are dynamically generated by the program ColdFusion MX which is used to directly and dynamically generate the PDF format of a report online everytime the query is run from the NRMP Database, and that is what the folks at NRMP.org are using. This is evident from the .cmf extension being used for the link instead of the .html or .htm extensions you see for regular web-pages
That 'code' is to identify a active online session and is unique to a user for a given logged-in session. In Other words, if you login again after 30-40 minutes, you are bound to see another 'id' code. This ID-TOKEN combination is basically a security feature to prevent any hacking possibility or prevent public search engines like Google to access the web-server files that are not meant to be public.
Now, Despite being 99% sure that this trick is a made-up hoax, the reasons why I still did have a 1% lingering doubt about the verity of this trick claim:
1. Some people did claim that did not get logged out after clicking on that now infamous bottom link. In such cases I would encourage having a look at the URL target for that link as explained on the screenshot above.
2. I wonder why have NRMP would have two different link URL targets for the same "Unfilled Programs" Link
3. We don't have enough evidence to disprove the hypothesis. In fact, to solve this mystery, I will be rolling out an online survey to folks on my Orkut, Facebook and Myspace communities to gather information to compare real match outcome versus predicted match outcomes and then, just for fun, run something like a Pearman's correlational analysis using SPSS to see the statistical strength of such an association!
4. If BOTH matched and unmatched applicants were given access to the unmatched program list by NRMP, this rumor would go flat out of window as inconsequential, but since only unmatched applicants will be granted access to the list.....hmm..gotta hold on till confirmatory proof pours in after the match.

HI, Digi Doc,
I believe that This trick indeed works. I am saying this, not because I am getting logged out myself when I click on the bottom page link. I will try to explain my logic to you below.
The deadline for certifying ROL for 2007 match was 9 pm EST on 21st February, 2006. The NRMP web site mentioned that it will be unavailable on 22nd February, from 7 am (as far as I remember correctly.. not sure) to till 7 pm or 9pm on 22nd February. I believe the actual algorithm is run by NRMP on this date itself (the real Match day!. only God and NRMP can say for sure??) It must be just a matter of mins to hours for NRMP to run a computer program on all eligible certified lists available in their database. I tend to believe that the account specific and the bottom link specific access (able to remain on that page or not, synonymous logged in or logged out) gets decided on this day.
One of my friends is appearing for her 2nd Match this 2007 season told that she had tried this last year too and he was not logged out at that time. she went unmatched for the 2006 match season.
they have to make sure that each and every applicant gets accurate information applicable to him/her. There can not be any error or chance left in this. I believe from 22rd February, to remaining time till 12th March, they will be just verifying and cross checking their results.
I do not know if the analogy between this NRMP trick and the OASIS trick for MLE results is right, but its strongly similar to that. and I had tried it oasis trick for both of my steps results. and it did not allow me to register for second atempt.
they must update their database as soon as the result is out. hence I believe the web site and account specific access and correct info HAS TO BE ENTERED AT the same time as the result is out (In NRMP case , the Match algorithm, )
and yes, the info could be validified only once you have the results of your post match survey on this NRMP trick. Guys, please do post your findings to his survey and lets see the result.
PS: someone at the match forums have also mentioned that out of 6 of his friends , 2 of them went unmatched and they were not logged out of the web site. where as the remaining 4 who did match, were logged out of the web site before match day.
Good luck to all.

hey!i picked up a prematch program, was registered with NRMP, but obviously withdrew before th ROL Certification deadline...and guess what, i still got logged out from th NRMP Bottom link...that indicates that it's not a real "trick"..one can't really believe everything that's written on these forums, this is sometimes, unfortunately done by some (really sadistic)ppl as a way to vent out their anxious feelings by getting other ppl anxious...not gud but true...my 2 cents: please wait up till Match Day, patiently, for th actual result to be out...as an old hindi saying goes "waqt se pehle aur kismat se zyada kisi ko nahin milta" (nobody ever gets anything before th destined time, and more than their destined share)..G/L on th Match!

To the prematched candidate - suppose the 'trick' were indeed true, then it can explain why you logged out - coz' you dont need the unfilled program list yourself, since you already prematched. Similarly, since the people who matched dont need the unfilled list of programs, they get logged out too. logical ?
At 4:37 PM, Anonymous said...
that's not true, th NRMP lets all th registered candidates access th list of unfilled programs, including th ones who were registered but withdrew later (for whatever reasons)..th withdrawn candidates have access beginning 13th march (tues)

This is what NRMP sites says:
1. "The matching algorithm considers an applicant "matched" if he/she lists only one program type on his/her certified rank order list. Applicants who receive this message will NOT have access to the Dynamic List of Unfilled Programs that is posted on Tuesday of Match Week"
2. "Applicants who were withdrawn by the NRMP because they obtained positions through another matching service will not have access to the Dynamic List of Unfilled Programs"
Check the FAQs link on NRMP.org

Hey, Its all bogus. I did not submit an ROL and still I got logged out.....Now, there's no logic to that!

THIS WORKED ......atleast for me!!!

hey!!!this works!!!

there is no such trick. I was getting logged out before today ie. 12th March 2006. today I saw I did not match. I had gone for interviews and had entered them into my certified rol. I was logged out and I did not match.
One friend who had entered programs in his ROL, jus like that, without going into any of those programs got logged out too. so there is no logic here. I have answered to your survey too already. Thanks DD.
hey digi doc...thanx alot fr all ur work....i jst went through the match trick u described in ur blog...n decided gve it a shot ...so i logged into my account n went through both links of unfilled programs...and both links took me to the msg (Unmatched applicants will be able to view unfilled program information on this page beginning at 12 pm eastern time on Tuesday , March 18, 2008)....so i assumed tat im nt matched yet...but thr something else tat i discovered while i logged in to my account n went to both links of unfilled program...the url for both the links is almost same other then last ten numbers and says https://services.nrmp.org/R3/Applicant/MyReports/Unfilled_Pgm/blah blah......so its kinda different then wat u described in ur blog....i jst wanted to discuss this wid u...coz i knw ur smart n will hve a lagical explaination for this....plzzz lemme knw wat is this abt....thanx
Hi, this post was during the 2007 match, and its quite possible that the website links have been rectified.
Additionally, the session information could also have made it cookie-based, storing the session information on the local computer for the code - do check back again after a day and see too
Anyways, after the NRMP match trick survey I conducted last year, I found the results to be equivocal - i.e. 'positive' NRMP match trick had a 50% chance of matching or not matching and hence = insignificant. Shall put up a post regarding that soon. Thanks
Hi
thanks for your work, I tried this trick but both links lead to same result which is still logn in, and also have same URL address exept the last number. I am asking if there is any person during this match who logned out after using this link. I think the website is rectified as you said. another question did you ever know or heard somone stil logned in but he matched in last year, since all the stories I heard about people get logned out but did not get matched, so what is the chances of the oppesite?
Thanks for your work
yes, i too wasn't logged out, but didn't check the URLs....so does that mean anything?
My Q is, has anyone clicked that link before certify the ROL, if some one did it earlier, and it stayed in log on status(of course), and then later on, after certify the ROL, it changed, then, I guess it really means something...
I also did the trick this time around and saw that both links in the column and also at the bottom were both the same and I also stayed logged in when i tried both. So I am not sure what value this holds, also for those of you think that it works for the usmle trick it doesnt anymore. I was able to log in and still passed.
even i was not logged out.. both the links for unfilled programs gave the same information about the date the list will be available..
I AM NOT LOGGED OUT. I CHECKED ALL THE ID FOR ALL THE LINKS NOT ONLY UNFILLED POSITION. ALL ARE THE SAME. SO THIS TRICK DOES NOT WORK.
Thanks for confirming that :D :D - more nails on the NRMP Trick coffin ;-)
Hey Doc, I did the trick and I didn't get logged out but I matched!!! So guess it's not a trick after all!!It just made me stressed out that's all!!
Case Closed then :-D and congrats !
Let me be the first one in 2009 season to test this trick..
I'm staying Logged IN but I know for sure I'll match as I was offered a Prematch which somehow couldn't workout due to logistical issues- program desperately wants me IN and have ranked me VERY high!!
Will confirm this news on the 16th!
This TRICK is nothing but another RUMOR like the survey thingy- NO base at all! Good luck to everyone
Thanks and Congrats plus Good luck :).
Guys,
Even i am logged in in this trick but my chances of matching are very high because my father is the attending in the same hospital where i am hoping to match i didnt choose to prematch because i was considering other good programs as well .
Whatever the case i will keep u updated with the Nrmp trick.
In short dont freak out if u are still logged in.
This trick may not be true !
Best,
Disha!
hey...
I matched. But the trick(s) always showed I wouldn't match.
So they are totally false.
