Why did you choose Endocrinology for Fellowship ?

This post marks the beginning of a transition of these blog to fellowship seekers in addition to residency seekers - lets call this a promotion of this blog ;-)

Endocrinology, as a specialty of Internal Medicine, must essentially carry some flavor of the Internal Medicine thinking & analytical mindset. People who like physiology, the algorithmic actions and interactions of hormones and their 'switches' would feel at home with this sub-specialty.

Lets look at some reasons why other endocrinologist decided to choose this field:

"I chose endocrinology as a specialty because it’s an area where physiology, pathology, and treatment of hormone-related illnesses go hand in hand."

Source: Dr. Odette Morgan

"I chose endocrinology as my specialty because my mentors impressed on me the importance of the application of physiology to the understanding of pathophysiology and therapy of patients with endocrine disease. Each patient that one sees is an experiment of nature."

Source: Dr. Michael Thorner

"In medicine you needed to make an initial diagnosis when it wasn't apparent early on what the problem was. Belly pain could be caused by something benign, something major, or something very unusual. Trying to play detective was what made it interesting to me. I chose endocrinology, finally, because of the really unusual presentation of diseases."

Source: Dr. Murray Korck

"When I was in my internal medicine residency, a colleague advised me to choose a subspecialty based on the most common illnesses that I would most likely encounter, not the esoteric ones. I decided that diabetes and thyroid diseases were the most interesting to me. In reality, I became very subspecialized in endocrine tumors and hormone-dependent cancers (like prostate cancer) and I rarely deal with diabetes at all! However, I still think the advice was sound."

So use these responses to frame an answer that suits your reasons. :-)
