Why Did You Choose To Be a Hospitalist ?

A Hospitalist is defined as a primary care physician employed for dedicated care of inpatients in a hospital - the traditional primary care physician on the other hand has / works for an external outpatient practice with admission privileges to a hospital.

"Hospitalist" sorta fancy when you hear it the first time - and it sure is hot term amongst the primary care physicians these days and a steady crop of Hospitalist fellowship programs are springing up across the United States. As of now, you don't really need to do a hospitalist fellowship to get a hospitalist job - a residency in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatrics or Ob-Gyn will suffice, but that might become a competitive edge later on. Here are the reason why Hospitalist positions are currently sought by some primary care doctors:

- like the fast paced hospital environment
- Want to concentrate on the clinical part rather than the administrative hassles and office expenses of running own clinic
- Good work schedules like one-day-on next-day-off or 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off
- Good salaries
- Like the Emergency Medicine guys, you do your work and leave off the patients to the next doc - no on-call headaches

And now Here are some good reasons you could use to frame your answer on a hospitalist position interview - scrubbed off the internet with pointing to their sources of course...

1. "I decided to become a Hospitalist because assisting very ill people to the point at which they can return home is a very fulfilling and rewarding experience for me."

2. "I chose to become a hospitalist because I grew weary of the day to day mad-house of ambulatory (clinic) work. Hospitalized patients tend to be "more interesting", and I feel more 'productive' (like I'm really helping sick people feel better) working in the hospital. Also, the business aspect is less cumbersome. I don't have to deal with managing people, a clinic, a business, etc. Also, since the hospital is open 24/7, the hours tend to be more flexible, and shift-like...which has it's perks"

3. "I decided to become a Hospitalist because I love hospital care and I love dealing one-on-one with patients and their families within the hospital setting."

Source: Gulay S.Uygur

4. Facing an acute medical condition requiring a hospital stay can be a frightening experience. I chose to be a hospitalist because helping people through this delicate healing process is extremely satisfying to me.
