HOW TO ASK ABOUT / REQUEST A PREMATCH POSITION ?
First of all - Should you even be asking for prematches ?
a. Unless a Program specifically tells you that it does not offer Pre-matches, there is no harm asking about prematch policies, provided of course that you are totally sure you want that program. You gotta be sure, because a Pre-match offer can be a double-edged weapon, as discussed earlier.
b. Prematches are Legal for IMGs, Canadian Medical Grads, American D
O Grads and American Medical Graduates who have already passed out from medical schools - unlike rumors about their 'illegalness'
Use tact !
- You don't wanna ask about Prematches right at the beginning of the interview and inadvertantly indicate desperation.
- If uncomfortable asking about one in person, a subtle request over email is a great idea. Here's a sample email request for Prematch position.
"Dear Dr. (Prog. Director)
Thank you for the opportunity to interview at your residency program. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, meeting the faculty, your residents and stand impressed by the range of training and the facilities. Specifically, the all-round training that a program gives and prepares the resident for the primary care scenario is appealing. I am convinced that I shall be able meet my goals at your program. Besides, I have friends (or relatives) nearby and would love to work in the small city (or large city or University Town) ambience that STUVWXYZ city offers.
I am happy to rank your program on the top of my list. Should your program offer a prematch position, I am willing to commit myself without delay. Kindly let me know if the possibility exists.
Thank you,
Sincerely,
Cai Zheng. "
Q. Which Months are Prematches more likely in?
Traditionally, the later months or December and January have been the more likely months - but note that such offers can come anytime. These days, just as IMGs rush to apply early to maximize interview chances, many Residency Programs, too, are offering prematches as early as September to improve their chances of filling as many positions as possible and get it done early.
Q. After an Interview, when is a Prematch offer Made ?
Again, no real rules on this one , coz an offer may made as early as immediately after the Interview OR even a month later. A lot of times, the offer comes via phone or email immediately after a candidate writes a "Thank you" email to the Program Director after the interview. So don't forget a thank you email after you have Interviewed ;-) Let's just say, generally speaking, the more a program has a history of unfilled positions, the more likely it is to offer a Prematch position.

Just A Personal Opinion:
Until 2-3 years ago, many people contemplated going for the Match rather than accept a Prematch from a low-ranked program. But, these days of intense IMG competition, Prematches are going to be extremely valuable in the coming years. 2005 season was ample evidence of 'match' frustration with many instances of high scores going matched and lower scores/credentials getting a position via prematches.
Moreover, this trend will only make the Match more of a Gamble than it already is - because when prematch positions are given out and reduces the total positions available for the match, only the Program directors and the NRMP get to know that a candidate has withdrawn from a Match - not the other candidates who will be participating in the Match.
All this may prompt stricter regulations on prematches - coz if prematches get so promiment - the Match process itself may be threatened to be redundant and too risky for IMG candidates ..or maybe eventually either Prematches will be scrapped OR AMGs will be allowed to accept Prematch offers too...
God ! Am I thinking tooooo much !

Yeah - 1 week is fine ...

what if we dont get a response to that note.. should we write to them again after a week or so......iam kinda confused, two of the programs asked me to email them if iam interested in prematch [i think they said this to all the candidates]...just wanted to know what is the best way to approach this kind of opportunity..
thanq once again....neena

You will get a response if they are interested. Dont push it though - a single email is fine. Often, instead of emailing about the offer, some programs prefer calling their candidates. So watch out for a phone call too.
Emailing the program director is a good way to request or enquire about a prematch

Yes that's a good thing to do - US is a market driven capitalistic society and bargaining works at different points of time ;-)
What you have done basically is assessing how much really the other program wants to have you...just like the other program that offered u a prematch is assessing how much YOU want to be with them.
Now,IF your scores are not too high and if you don't have a great application profile with lotsa clinical experience (in other words if you are not confident about the match ) - then with the heightened competetion in mind, its practical to accept the prematch offer at hand. "a bird in hand is worth two ...." u know wut I mean. Once you accept it, the next thing to do is be happy about it and not feel like a victim of fate :-) COz thousands of IMGs would be ready to give up lots to be in your position ...
so yea..await for a response and do what your instincts thing in the best . g/l pal !

hey doc thnx fr ur reply
like u said will await response and see
but i have good univ interviews in dec and jan..........and have also interviewed at good places like
UT@ HOUSTON,MCG.....which do not prematch
so u see.........im in a real fix

That's true, it;s not easy. On the practical side, if you think you have very strong credentials and good mix of easy to get in programs along with your good ones, then you may risk not taking the prematch offer

hi digi doc!!
i really appreciate the work u ve been doin..it s truly selfless and it has made it a lot easier for all of us out here!!thanks..

i ve just got 2 interviews in hand and the first one s on the 5th this month.. is it advisable to send the program a New year greeting even before i interview with them?

I would drop in an simple email wish to the coordinator and the program director without getting too jazzy :-)
thanks for ur kind comments ..and good luck !
DO PDs offer prematch to candidates who do't have ECFMG certificate ,but have very good scores and have already finished residency in IM back home?
Yes they can, if they are reasonable sure that you will be ECFMG certified by the time Residency starts...
I know an IMG who was offered a Prematch on Step 1 scores alone
I am intersted in one program and interviewed there. After writing a thank you letter I am not getting any reply from them. How do you think will be a request email again to have a second look at program to let them know I am really interested?/Thanks
Sure you can do that - and if granted a second visit, you could ask about a pre-match then at the end of the visit.
Hi,
I had an interview yesterday, the associate director said, very good, and at the end, if you have any questions or anything you can come here again.
Does that mean I ask him for a second visit in thank you note? or ask PC in thank you note?
Thanks.
Dr2b.
Sure - that pretty much implies an invitation for a second visit. And if they do offer pre-matches, and you are ready to take it if offered, a second visit is all the more recommended :-)
Hi,Digi Doc..i have a quiry
i have good credentials and US experience with me,but has not taken yet step 3.planning it in last week of december. The program in which i am interviewing are known to give prematches, but i have heard of step 3 status for prematch. For me, i consider for me J1 visa also fine, as it has its owm fellowship advantages. How should i negotiate in a program, tht is known to give prematches.Should i tell them joining ur residency program is my priority over type of visa just now, or i can take J1 as well.,or my result would be out till last week jan..
thanks for anticipated reply.
Rohit
Do asking prematch and saying that I will rank program high in email is not against the rules of NRMP?
i was offered a prematch by email and they asked me to send them the letter of intent to them which i did. Now is that good enough to withdraw from match or should i ask them to send me residency contract letter....ur comments
one program that i intrviewed at has a history of giving out prematches. but they arent giving it this year.
do u think they can switch over and offer prematch position if they really like a canditate
Answer 1:
You can surely tell them the same thing, that you would like to have the J1 visa for fellowship benefits later and that you be honored if you were considered for a prematch position, and enquiring whether they would still need a step 3 for a prematch (which they should not)
Answer 2:
No telling the programs that you will rank them high is no probs, NRMP prohibits telling them where exactly you will rank - like 3rd, or after University so-n-so, etc.
Answer 3: Enquire about the approximate time of arrival of the match contract. If they have not yet asked you to withdraw, you could hang on until the last week of withdrawal and enquire again about the match contract, if not arrived by them. You could politely write that you are anxious about the contract and would like to have some assurance.
Answer 4: Yes, programs are known to revert their policies - just like credit cards could suddenly change their APRs ;-). So, if they did have a history, surely convey in your email that you would be interested on a prematch if at all they were offered, but don't push it after that if they decline.
Hi digidoc!
i was interviewd at a program for prelims position recently. one of the faculty interviewd me and thats it. the PD did not even see any of us. in this case, whom shud v address our thank you letter to? either to the FACULTY, who interviwed me or to the PD, even though he did not see us, or to BOTH of them?.. shud v thank the PC too?please let me know..i'm in a confusion..wud b grateful to u..
Hi Digital doc,
I am in a dilemma..
I am in a residency program right now. Due to family issues I would like to either transfer to another program or reapply this year. But In the eras application, they ask about the program director, the license no. etc. If I give the information will my PD know that I am reapplying. I don't want to jeopardize my career if nothing positive comes out of it.
Could you please advise me on whether it is okay to reapply while still in a residency.
Thanks,
Hello Digitaldoc
I am in a difficult situation and need your help. I was interviewed at a program in the end of november. The program is known to give prematches, I showed my interest in prematch, 15 days later, the PD called me for a phone interview, he looked impressed, I told him that my wife is going to interview with them. He ended the phone call on a positive note.
The next day after my wife's interview, my wife was offered a prematch by the same program. They told my wife that your husband is not being offered a prematch but this does not mean that he is not a stong candidate, he is a very strong candidate for match. My wife accepted the prematch.
So my question now is that program is now my personal first choice, what should I do next. Should I schedule a second visit or should I try emailing them or calling them for showing my interest. We are not in couple's match.
Thanks
Dr GB
Answer 1: Sure email PD too to thank him for the opportunity and to brief him what you liked about the program and how you will be ranking them..
*********
Answer 2: If you are reapplying for PGy2 positions, you don't need to use ERAS, rather every program will have their own method of accepting applications for PGY2 transfers. You can email potential programs about your interest and reasons for transfer - plus the need to keep things under wraps until they really like your profile, if they are interested, they will ask you what application documents they need. BUt eventually they will need a recommendation letter from your program director. If you have been doing well in your residency program, your PD will understand you family issues and will issue you PGY1 completion and a recommendation letter.
If you are reapplying for PGy1 position, there is always the risk of the programs trying to contact your program..in that case, it might be wiser for you to talk to your program director about your genuine problems and you could ask him/her for a solution :-) they will understand...
All said, it surely is a risk..but if you been on the good books so far, that usually should not be a problem.
*******************
Answer 3: You are thinking on the right lines, convey your interests that way and good luck on the match, offer to do pre-start observership if matched..don't pester them too much. :-) Good luck to you both and congrats to your wife
i wasa interviewed on a tuesday band wrote a thank you letter to the coordinater on thursday asking for all the addresses and she did not answer me back so i called her to find out and mailed my all the other thank you notes on atuesday bagain so it took me a week to send my lketters will that make any difference and will the directoe see it as an indidsipline
