INTERVIEW TIP # 8 : Scheduling your Residency Interview

Timing those interview calls entails a little bit of strategy too :-) If you are done with all Step 1, 2 CK and 2 CS - schedule yours as early as possible to clinch a possible pre-match deal (if you want one, that is)

In addition, for prematch-seekers, another advice is to schedule the best programs FIRST and then the others. When an Prematch offer is made, you will usually be granted about a 4-6 days to decide on the offer. (Some places give as low as 48 hours). Now, if a prematch offer came by and a good interview is still pending - that puts you in a fix. To avoid that, if possible, schedule your best calls first - and if a prematch offer comes by luckily from those - snap it ip :-)

If your Step2 Ck or Step 2CS results are pending, you might as well schedule yours immediately after your results are out...or after your expect your results to be out..

If Step 2 CK or Step 2 CS is not yet taken - and you have an interview call/calls, it may be good to take a late dates and rather concentrate on finishing steps fast...

For Programs known to NOT offer prematches, like many University Programs, many people opine that scheduling a late Interview like Late-Dec or Jan is good, coz' the memory about you stays fresher in the minds of the interviewers while preparing those Rank Order Lists ! of course u may, if the program agrees and if they offer prematches that u wanna take, that's all the more reason to prepone dates :-) Shud not affect ur chances there at all..do give them a valid reason

dear digitaldoc

is it possible to take up a prematch offer from a community hospital this match and change to a better program in the next match?i donot have great scores and my US Clinical experience is nil,so im not confident of getting into a good program this year, but i would have gained some US clinical experience by next match

hi, Digital Doc,

I have interviews from few hospital which I come to know giving prematch.
Unfortunately, I have scheduled them in last wk of Nov and first wk of December. Now I think I should reschedule them somewhere in 2nd and 3rd wk of November.
I am wondering weather doing so would affect my chances at interview. Also, what reason should i give them while rescheduling.
Can I tell PC that - "I have interviews from other program in same state but at different time pocket. so I want to keep all interview in same time period to decrease traveling to and fro."
Please put some light over this.

FYI - I have total 5 interviews in IM and 2 in FM. Credentials - 92/95/ CS pending on 10th Oct/ GC/ No USCE

Thank You.

I am sorry this is my first time about interviews. Please advice.

Thank you.

To atwits:

Yes you can, either look for open PGY2 positions (no need for match) or start all over with the match (sept 1st applications). Its not always easy to tell the program director, but you can be a hard working resident, gain his/her liking and then eventually let her/him know that you have to leave since you would like a good academic research experience...or some other good reason. Coz' mostly the other program would like a letter of recommendation from your program director.

To dipti:

If the program does not give prematches, then sure ..interviewing late is beneficial. Yes many programs will allow interviews in Jan too.

If you explain to them properly with a good reason why you need a later date (instead of just saying - unavoidable circumstances -) they surely wont mind..you are not too near ur interview date, which gives them enough time to make changes.
