Interview Invitations : Community v/s University programs
Usually, Community hospital residency program interviews begin earlier than University hospitals - why ? because community hospitals, in a way, are only looking for qualified physician workers and can quickly screen applicants based on scores and clinical experience. University programs, on the other hand, with their academic and research obligations, also look for additional values that residents can bring to the program.
I once spoke to a Program Director in Internal Medicine at University program and he told me that scores definitely are important, but thats not the only screening tool they employ while deciding on interviews - a holistic approach is used. This is why , usually, University programs - especially the big ones, send out interview invites slightly later than community programs.
Increasingly, the programs that offer prematches, are sening out interview invites much earlier and even offering prematches as early as the 2nd and 3rd week of September - coz, just as candidates must apply early to improve chances of getting interview calls, programs too are beginning to realize that they must start interviews early if they want to be filled and get the best candidates from the pool.
