IMG files lawsuit on ECFMG Document Verification

And the lawsuit was not against ECFMG - rather against the Medical school for allegedly not verifying the documents , thus delaying ECFMG certification for the complainant, Dr. Atif Anwar.

According to this news story:

"The petitioner said that he had passed USMLE Step-I in 2006 and had applied for USMLE Step-II, but the principal was not ready to verify the documents"

I am mentioned this piece of news to help highlight the need for IMGs to staying on top of thing when it comes to getting documents verified on time by both your medical school and ECFMG. This is often forgotten in all the anxiety to get steps and application done on time. There have been stories of how everything was in order but the final ECFMG certification did not come through, losing the eligibility to be in the match. So lets visit ECFMG Certification requirements again:

There are three things needed to be 'ECFMG Certified':-

1. Pass Step 1, Step 2 CK and Step 2 CS (No. of attempts don't matter for certification)
2. Graduate from medical school
3. Have your medical credentials submitted to ECFMG, which will forward them to your medical school for verification and which must be returned to ECFMG by the medical school after verifying them - Like ECFMG website says:

"Your credentials are not considered complete until ECFMG receives verification directly from the issuing school(s) and accepts this verification."

which country is this file suit in?

whatever the outcome, I guess it should be in favor the medical residency applicant, this matter should be conveyed either by the court, and/or the ECFMG to all the medical schools in that country/all worldwide medical schools, so that they all know , its a serious aspect in an IMG's career costing needless years in waiiting for residency and every year one faces incrementally increasing tough competition to get in USA..

ECFMG certifies has become a screening CUT-OFF criteria now when I write this on 3/20/2008 before my own "Where I matched" result....

Best wishes to all,

Hi, I am having the same problem, although it is for the California letter where the medical board wants documents to be sent directly from the med school. My school (I am an old IMG) refuses to do this, but is willing to give me the documents so that I can send it to the board. Any ideas as to the validity of this? Has anyone done this smoothly before? If so, any tips? Thanks for the great blog, digitaldoc.
