FMGAmerica : A Possible Fraud ?
For quite sometime now,
I have been receiving regular updates from a group of IMGs who have had bitter experiences with FMGamerica - a firm that supposedly places IMGs in clinical externships and also helps them with residency placements for a big sum of money.
Once before in the past, I had already posted a warning-kinda post about FMGamerica and the complaint posted on BBB. That was obviously based on circumstantial evidence, but this group of IMGs who have been victims themselves decided to dig deeper into, do some sleuthing and uncovered some pretty startling facts.
As I understand, this group has now hired a detective to investigate further. If anyone else had bitter experiences with FMGAmerica.com, it may help to write to FMGjustice@yahoo.com. Since I am merely reporting a possible scam story and not myself investigating, I may not be able to help on any complaints you might have.
Here's one story in the words of an IMG who goes by FMGjustice@yahoo.com:
"I graduated from medical school in 2005. After contacting various residency programs, I saw that many programs needed US clinical experience. I searched for it and was unable to procure anything for myself. I happened to find the website www.fmgamerica.com and I called the number listed on it's website. A gentleman answered, by the name of "Dr. Brus". I spoke with him, he was very encouraging and very positive and I felt this is a good place to go, since he seemed very nice man.
The price he quoted to me was 4,700.00 and said that if I sent a check in, they would take 400.00 dollars off from my package. That was a lot of money saved for me, so I agreed. I sent the money to their office in NJ. I was told that they will assign me to "Dr. Norman Cohen" and that he was a program director retired from OB/GYN. He even gave me his website www.imgsociety.org, his picture and biography was listed as program director ( they removed it after our complaints)
After paying the money, FMGamerica rarely responded to my phone calls, call after call went unanswered and many times the message said the answering machine was full. I talked to Dr. Cohen and he told me : Here's a name of 3 doctors, you can interview with them and maybe they will take you they are good friends. He sent me this email:
"
I am working on your placement. You may (no guarantee) receive a call from xoxoxox who is the manager of a large medical group xoxoxo She may have a position for you or may wish to interview you. Here is some very important advice:
1) Be humble and enthusiastic
2) Give the impression that you wish to help the group any way you can
3) Never be demanding
4) To maintain your confidentiality it is best not to mention FMG America. Residency directors (and the attendings that sponsor you) want to see that you took the initiative yourself. I am just a friend of a friend that is helping to advise you if anyone should ask. Again, this is to protect your confidentiality.
Let me know if you are contacted in the next few days. In the meantime, I will see what else I can find. I have other feelers out.
Dr. Cohen
"
That made me think - what do you mean 'friends'? and what do you mean 'maybe'? I paid for an externship program, not for this guy to give me a list of doctors. When I read the email, I was shocked about no guarantee! what did I pay 4000 dollars for!
Anyways, I called the doctors right away one by one and explained to them my predicament, they all seemed shocked at my story. They said they had no idea about this paid externship thing or who/what FMGAmerica is. They said they just got a call from some Dr. Cohen they never heard from him before and he was begging them to help a poor IMG and so they agreed.
Next, I called the AMA and looked up Dr. Cohen in Florida where he had said he worked. I called his old practice and found it was sold and that he never retired - instead he had lost his license to medical malpractice. I also asked who is Dr. Brusramer and no one was able to find this guy. I called up the ECFMG and they were in shock. A friend of mine who lives in NY went to the office address - it turned out to be an accountant, Mr. Norman Fleishcer. He said he can't give any information and that he simply cashes the checks for his client FMG America.
The story gets better. I got together with the other people complaining and we reviewed all of our details. My husband want to check the IP address of all the emails and they were all coming from ISRAEL! could not believe this! These people are not even in the U.S.!
Then, I called Dr. Cohen. He was startled and said that he was never a program director, rather just an Ob/Gyn Doc. He even asked me to not him again. "
I complained to FMGamerica and they threatened my visa status and ability to match in any residency program in the US. They keep yelling that you have a contract, now even better they sent me a list of img programs they were so sloppy that when they copy-pasted, they left the source website name on it and the website wasn't even their's. I had my classmate call them from another number to check them out and to record this guys voice we did it a few times, one day the same-voice guy is Dr. Brus, the other day it's "Dr. Crane" and yet another day he is "Dr. Harper"
- Thank you,
Fellow IMG"
*********
And here's another story from a second IMG:
"I graduated top of my class in my country quite a while ago. Recently I found myself in some very hard circumstances and in need of working a better paying job. I decided to finally do my residency. I’m very busy and the application process seemed overwhelming. Then I came across FMG America’s website. It sounded so good: a clinical externship, lots of help with the application process, your own counselor....So I inquired about signing up. I talked to a Dr. Crane (I’m not sure at this point if he really exists...) who sounded very professional. He asked me to send my CV, which I did. On my CV it clearly listed all dates of my exams. I also made it perfectly clear to Dr. Crane that I needed a residency in CALIFORNIA, that I could NOT move. I received an admission letter from FMG America, Dr. Crane assured me that after paying the fee I will get a hospital based externship not far from my home within the next two weeks. He said that he would put me in touch with my California Counselor Dr. Cohen. FMG America charged $4,250.- if I pay by personal check, by credit card they wanted $4,600!!! That was A LOT of money for me to come up with but I’m in such desperate need of a residency here in California that I paid it.
After paying it took longer than 2 weeks until a Dr. Cohen just gave me the names of a couple of physicians and an office lady. He warned me in an email not to mention FMG America. When I called the doctor offices nobody knew anything, people seemed confused and surprised. I finally talked an Internist into letting me watch her (pure observership!!). NO CLINICAL EXTERNSHIP!
It turns out the doctors didn’t even know Dr. Cohen, they just tried to be friendly and help another doctor out. The help I got otherwise from FMG America consisted of a copied and pasted (from a website) list of Internal Medicine residencies!
But here is the worst: after spending tons of time and money (getting all the documents from my home country, applying and paying the fee for my California Postgraduate Training Authorization Letter) I get a call from the California Medical Board telling me that I don’t qualify for a residency in California because my exams have expired!!!!! The dates of my exams were clearly listed on my CV which I sent to FMG America!!!! They took my money even though I never had a chance!!! I immediately notified FMG America and asked for a refund. They never responded to any of my calls and emails.
I feel like a fool, being robbed of so much money!! I don’t want this to happen to anyone else!!!
"
And Here's a Third Email from yet another IMG:
"
Thanks"
Hmmmm...
It's quite possible that some others had good experiences with FMGamerica. But be it a Scam or a business model implemented sloppily - not giving the customers what was clearly implicated when the money was taken, is a breach of contract to me. And here's the BBB report on FMGamerica. If you do a Whois.net look up on FMGamerica.com, we get the organization address listed as California instead of New York - but then that could be where the webservers are located.
Will post more as more details come to the fore

Dear Sir/Madam
I paid more than 1000 us dollars to FMG America. They told me that they have special fax system, and knowledge, and they will be able to help me get a residency position in a residency program. They were not helpful as they said, and took the money with out any outcome. They then start sending me emails to apply through them for externships, which I did not apply through them, because my previous experience was not satisfactory at all.
I wonder they also contact Medical coleges and Universities across US to help get Medical graduates residency programs. After my personal experience, I will request other colleagues not to contact them for any residency position or externship.
Thanks"

Post Your Comment !They are taking advantage of a desperate need and unsuspecting innocence of IMGs
I too was taken advantage of FMG america. I was the individual in the first persons story who went to the address given to us. I had found out that it was just an accountant's office. They don't have a real office location. My situation is similar to the above individuals. They are taking money from img's who are gather vast sums of money. Fmg America doesn't provide you with any real externships just phone numbers of individuals. Dr. Cohen one of the guys who is supposedly working for you tells you to never give information about FMG America to the individual who you are trying to get an externship. Why not? Aren't they providing a service who should be associated with that individual. I have nothing but disrespect for these couple of individuals who run FMG solely to gain money. They also use fear tactics to prevent IMG's to never contact agencies to help them get their money back. Please never use this agency and WARN YOUR FRIENDS "DON'T USE FMG AMERICA!"
Thanks a million digidoc for the post and the victims for coming in front to protect the fellow test takers.
I always smelt something fishy about these websites but was still going to risk a lot of money in order to get the whatever little USCE they would have provided me.
But todays' blog has really opened my eyes...
thanks again.....
hi check out this link in orkut..where i have posted the entire email i received from fmg justice...
http://www.ama-assn.org/amednews/site/free/bisa0326.htm
this is the link for ama-assn..bt now fmg affordable has been proved fraud...
any idea about fmgportal..sir?
Time to replace the "F" in FMG to "Frauding" Medical Grads then ;-) "FMG" as a term is anyways obsolete and replaced by IMG
I am also victim of the FMGamerica. However I do not know what to do with those kind of stupid fellows. It is unbelievable thus kind of simple cheating goes on unabted in USA. What is the responsible department to look into this kind of fraud.
There have been references to other firms linking them to FMGamerica - unfortunately I cannot allow that based on Google search inferences alone.
How about FMGportal. they r also offer some externships and USCE ...if u have any info about them plz let me now bcoz i need USCE very badly or any other place where i can have scure USCE .u now how we collect money for that.THANK YOU Digital DOC.M.D.
I have no specific information on them - except that there can never be guarantees. Its your money and I feel the money-payer has the right to have a clear picture of what he is being offered BEFORE the payment is made. If any of these agencies are unable to do that for you, tell you anything or give any assurance/contract in writing before you pay them - its a risk.
I have got to tell you guys that this all seems like such crap, because I have only a wonderful experience with FMG America, and that was after getting screwed over by FMG Portal.
For my money, fmgamerica was great and they got me a really nice clinical experience, with nice letters of rec, you know. So I dont know why everyone is hating on these guys...I can say first hand that they are not a fraud and people should think twice before making such silly claims.
Hey you so happy why are you posting anonymous? Just call the Better Business Bureau in New Jersery and also Consumer Affairs in NJ, and wait we are working with ic3.gov of FBI you people will all know what it means to cheat people soon. My husband told me I was so stupid he said look at their payment page it looks not trusting and I sent them a check anyway I was so stupid after my check, they never answer their phone and they call back at time Im never there 1 min you call back no one pick up phone then I find they are in Israel and my husband check my email they all coming from Israel. I pay for externship they send me to a guys office who does not know what Im doing there he said I dont know you can come 1 day a week and do vital sign taking
and no touching anyone beside this. Why not wash also toilets??
Their man Norman Fleischer in NJ he said im so sorry they are big time fraud this guy is just my friends kid I just take the money and put it in his bank account in Israel you don't believing this call him it is same place we all sends our check he say have people they call me I will tell them truth and never take their money

Can u please tell us digitaldoc whether FMGportal,IMGprep are safe sites to apply for usce??? i have no other way to apply for usce other than these sites...it u have a better option can u let us know??...
I did use FMG America. First I did call the BBB about them and although FMG America was not registered with them, which most companies dont use the BBB as they are not a legal entity, there were unverified complaints but no decisions made against FMG America. I spoke to FMG America's counselors who sounded much more competent and informative than IMG Prep, or FMG Portal, and only after recieveing a contract from FMG America did I pay them money. And so what if they check goes to an accountant...isnt that normal business practice as well?
So in the end, I must say that I was pleased with their services and my externship which was in a fabulous community hospital doing internal medicine rotations.
Everyone should decide for themselves and not make wild claims. I liked them so much that I reccomeded them to my cousins back home. And this year I have 5 interviews so far.
I guess, what needs to be learned from all these experiences is that it's important to receive a legal contract clearly stating the kind of experience that the purchaser will be getting, before making any payments in full - that should apply to any externship service - whether known to be good or bad.
Ok sure you come to cheat us some more ya? I suggest digital you call this guy Norman Fleischer and ask him some questions he worked for them. He actually counted my money in cash and then apologized to me about taking it said he had no idea these guys were doing this.
Their man Norman Fleischer in NJ he said im so sorry they are big time fraud this guy is just my friends kid I just take the money and put it in his bank account in Israel you don't believing this call him it is same place we all sends our check he say have people they call me I will tell them truth and never take their money

Hi DigitalDoc
I come from middle class family in India. Unable to clear CS on first attempt was thinking of approaching the companies sometime later if possible for externship. I myself had warned few friends who had good money. thanks for thowing good light on all scams from Nigerian to now Israeli. You Digitaldoc+digitalcop.
Thanks a lottttttttttttttttt
Hey that was scary man...thank God i got a mail from you today dig doc first time i got a mail on updates thank you!!You know i have been sending mails to hospitals with score n all but no response they all say no observership externship..and i was actually later gonna consider the fmg portal ya GOD saved me...:-)
Hey dig doc wat do i do now whom to mail for internal medicine externship?I am planning on CS in May and wanted to do externship around dat time only!
One more thing some hospitals say externship/observership do not count as USCE then how do IMGs get any other form of USCE ya?
i also payed 1150 for a guranteed residecy position and was duped.I kept calling and no one ever picked up the phone. I didnt bother to follow up as I knew my money was gone.
I urge you all to
1)Not use any of these so called providers
2) if u decide to then try and use paypal or something like that before you pay so that they get paid on delivery of the goods
I know many of you now looking to scramble. I do not think that all services are bad ones and at the same time i am not going to mention names since i may be accused of advertsing them. Ask any service these questions if your concern is the scramble.
1. Is your site whois registration exposed to the public? (check http://www.whois.net) Many scam sites use what is called PROXY or private registrations...STAY AWAY FROM THESE.
2. Is your site a MEMEBER of BBB (better business beauru). (check http://www.bbb.org) When a business is BBB member it means they back their services. If not a member at least check for their records. If no record then no good if negative then here we go.
3. Does your site offer a contact support number? Toll free numbers such as 800 and 866 ONLY listed is no good. You need ato ask them if they have a LOCAL phone number.
4. Does your site offer you to SEE the scramble system that is used to submit your faxes and emails? When I registered to xxxxxxxxx (scramble service) I was able to see and use the system on my own. I was able to fax and email any program on my own (except in the scramble they do the work).
Hope this helps most of you here.
Good luck.
Digi please dont let people use this place to advertise their stupid service please remove this type of craps, we are doctors we are much more smart than this Nisma
Hi...I think Nisma makes a valid discussion on how to choose a professional service if someone wants to - she/he gives good pointers how to smell a scam without referring to any service in particular.
I myself would not generally recommend using any professional service since ERAS/NRMP warned against Fax-spam on their website
I talked to Mr Bob, he asked for $4500/&said he will place me in Harlem Hospital for 6 months externship.I told him that I want to speak to program director Mr Collen first'&I read about all this stuff in digitaldoc. They are not attending my call after this. Thanks a lot for your information.Plz let me know about IMGPrep, are they reliable?
Thank you for you e-mail, you save my life , I knew it was something wrong, because they insist to much so you can send the money , i've notice when my contac "Molly" call me many times and when I retured her calls somebody else answer and he didn't have idea who Molly was, this was from Americlerships, my second try was with IMGprep program, they offer you the heaven, but even though you pay $4000 to 6000, for a couple a weeks, they say that can not guarantie the letter of recomendation. Fortunatelly I didn't have the money that moment, so I didn't accept, Thank you again for the warning!!!!
I think it is important to stop this ,maybe the ECFMG who know exactly who apply for the program shoud send some e-mails for warning, I think is the only way to stop this, and ofcourse put in jail to this persons.
I'm so sorry for all the people whos been fraud, but I believe in divine justice, dont worry sonner or later this people is gonna pay.
Dig,
I called fmg america, just to ask a question, they called me at work at home they never stopped calling me. Now I ended up in private practice with a PA no doctor. I had no money I borrowed the money and I sent the check to the adress you have here. A PA wrote my letter of recommendation the doctor was never there. Can someone please help me? Never trust these fmg america cheaters, now I check with my bank my check was cashed in Israel. They never did any help with anything and I lost my application this year.
ill be very honest w u and im not here to spread any disinformation or wr-eck anybodies buissness. but please dont do this. i have many reasons. first they dont do anything for u. they just take money from and then if u get it its because of your own credentials. PLEASE READ THE CONTRACT CAREFULLY and ull see many clauses that will screw u up. for example. if u dont pay the money until the date propsed there will be a 25% surcharge everymonth. that means if u dont pay up for next 4 months ur fee will double. there is nothing ull be able to do cos u SIGNED IT. they can sue u and ur carrier will be in the drain. Second thing the FMG american and US health systems everything are all qu-acks they have no contacts inside the hospitals or whatsoever. they just try to pay the attendantings inside the hospital. I was offered a prematch by one of these fra-uds for 180 000 dollars. yes u read right . i kept saying no until they came down to 90 000. but i still said no. I not only got a prematch in CT but i thank God that i didnt sign that. cos i would have had to pay that money in one month. if i failed there was 25 percent surcharge every month. this means i never woud have paid it off. I would been their sla-ve for the rest of my life. And they hospital where they were offering the so called prematch was i learned later on was the sh-it-iest program in new york in bronx. PLease think before what u sign. Ur my doc brothers and sisters. please dont seell ur self to these mongers. Use ur contacts to get these observerships. All u gave to do is find a person from ur country who is an attending somewhere. or better u know the person already. just request them to keep them w u for a while so u can shadow them. Second route is to find a research and then do observership w the same person. Thats easy to do. I have done both so i know WIthout ANY CONTACTS. u can make contacts on the way so best of luck God blesss u.
Protect yourself from being a victim of fraud!
1) VERIFY THE AUTHENTICITY OF THE ORGANIZATION THROUGH AN INDEPENDENT MEDIUM!
Contact the Better Business Bureau and review the organization’s historical record.
Check for a satisfactory or unsatisfactory record of the organization.
If the organization has an unsatisfactory record, check to see if there were any issues that went unanswered.
If there are any negative or unresolved issues about the organization, contact a representative of the organization and ask hard questions.
Do not be satisfied with simple answers!
2) PROTECT YOUR INVESTMENT AND GIVE YOURSELF AN OPPORTUNITY TO GET BACK YOUR MONEY IN CASE OF FRAUD!
The type of payment accepted by a company is an excellent indicator of how likely they are to be involved in fraudulent activities.
Never pay by check or money order! Always leave yourself the ability to dispute a payment if you do not receive the service you are contracting for.
Be warned! Question why organizations offer you substantial rebates for payment by check or money order! If an organization encourages you to pay by check, and offers you a substantial discount (more than $100.00), they may be fraudulent!
If they deposited your money in their accounts by check or money order, and the organization turns out to be fraudulent you cannot get back your money!
Always pay by credit card! In the case where the organization turns out to be fraudulent, there is a record of the charge. You can dispute the charge and get your money back!
3) BEFORE PAYING BY CREDIT CARD, VERIFY THAT THE METHOD OF PAYMENT IS SECURE!
Only deal with verified merchants. Not all credit card processing companies offer consumers the same level of protection. Credit card processing companies will offer consumers a way to verify the organization.
Do not take the certification logo at face value! Click on the certification! A link must pop-up verifying that the organization is a verified merchant.
If the link does not pop-up, then the organization is not authorized the use of the certification logo. It may be an indication of fraud!
4) BE CAREFUL OF ORGANIZATIONS THAT USE PAYPAL TO PROCESS CREDIT CARD TRANSACTIONS!
Anyone with an email account may set up PAYPAL to receive credit card payments. PAYPAL does not necessarily offer the secure, verified method of payment that other credit card processing companies do. It does nothing to verify the legitimacy of the organization, since all you need is an email account!
If the organization only accepts credit-card payment via PAYPAL, ask why! It may be an indicator of fraud.
5) NEVER GIVE YOUR CREDIT CARD INFORMATION OVER THE TELEPHONE!
6) AVOID SENDING A CHECK OR MONEY ORDER IN THE MAIL!
If you must send a check or money order in the mail to pay for services, require that a Company Employee sign for the check, and require that the check be signed for at delivery. Demand that your contract state that the check is being paid for specific services, to a company located at a specific location. This is the least preferred method of payment since it offers the consumer the least amount of protection, and avoid wherever possible!
As with any decision, choosing what organization to use to assist you in the residency matching process can be a difficult one. Protect yourself from being taken advantage of by following these steps.
Be an educated consumer!
FMG America totally screwed me over last year during the 2007 match. I was desperate for help and I paid them a few thousand dollars. I did not receive ANY help. God only knows what they did with all the information they took from me. DO NOT USE FMG AMERICA!!!!!!! IT IS A TOTAL FRAUD.
