How can IMGs practice medicine in Singapore ?

OK they don't use the term "IMGs" - they rather say "Foreign-trained Medical doctors".

While Singapore is officially the best place on earth to do business, the country is dealing with a doctor-shortage crisis. they are training their attraction-guns on foreign trained docs and have been slowing opening up entry pathways.

With good salaries (that I shall cover soon on my Physician salaries blog), availability of advanced medical technologies and an urban lifestyle, there sure are many takers.

Q. So how can an IMG get registered for a license to practice medicine in Singapore ?

A. To begin with, you do not need to give any additional exams like the USMLE, PLAB or AMC to get it...Phewww....but you sure do need to be from medical schools recognized by the Singapore Medical Counsil. Click here to see the complete list of Foreign medical schools currently recognized by the Singapore Medical Council. (159 schools in total as of 2008, with the United States schools in maximum numbers.)

Now, to practice / study post-graduate medicine in Singapore, IMGs can either get registered as generalists or specialists and they must be from medical schools recognized by the Singapore Medical Council.

[ Note: The same list is probably also a good source of information about which schools are most esteemed on the international scene, incomplete though.]

1. For registration as a generalist, IMGs need to go through gradual degrees of registration (provisional --> conditional --> Full ) with varying eligibility requirements. Click Here to read about the procedure for IMGs to register with the Singapore Medical Council.

2. To register as a specialist IMGs need to obtain specialist accreditation from the Specialists Accreditation Board (SAB) after a full or conditional registration thingie I just spoke about.

3. Click here to read for information about Post-Graduate Residency training for foreign medical graduates that leads to the Master Of Medicine degree from the prestigious National University of Singapore.

Their restrictive medical school list does not meet the demand for more doctors, making them expand the list of medical schools from time to time. Click here to read about Singapore's latest Ministry of Health (MOH) move to add 20 more foreign medical schools on their recognized schools list.

To Michael Pakenham, Do check the IMED directory of international medical schools recognized by US and other countries that used IMED directory

To Dr. from Calcutta,

The Singapore list of Approved schools keeps expanding - was 140 in 2007 and is now about 160 in 2008, so keep checking the list linked on this page. Another way would to call the Singapore Medical Council directly
