Poetry on morning rounds, St. Barnabas style...
The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education continually looks for ways to improve medical education as a core strategy towards better patient safety and quality. One of latest innovative ideas came from Richard S. Panush, M.D, Chair of Internal Medicine at Saint Barnabas Medical Center at NJ, which is ranked among the top 5% hospitals in the US for Overall Clinical Performance by HealthGrades in 2008.
His Internal Medicine program along with 21 others is selected by the ACGME to participate in the Educational Innovations Project.
The residents discuss a poem, literary piece, article or even a painting on morning rounds or conferences to keep their human sensitivities towards life alive during training.

Hmmm...I think this would certainly be a good thing to do on teaching / service rounds - but should probably spare the post-call resident ! Dr. House would probably have a hearty laugh ;-). Here's a clip of a rare incidence when he actually tries to be well-mannered with a patient ..lol
